Woolworth Mansion, Estate of the Day

The department store F.W. Woolworth built some pretty impressive homes in the early 1900s. While his own home, the beautiful Winfield Hall in Glen Cove, New York, has fallen on hard times, the home he built for his daughter Edna on the Upper East Side has fared better. This 14-room residence is in a 25' x 94' townhouse designed by C.P.H. Gilbert. The home is in mint condition and has five bedrooms, a formal dining room and a dark and sumptuous paneled library. It is listed at $23.45 million. After the jump, be sure to look up while eating in the dining room.

WOW. What a beatiful home. I would love to see it with less traditional interior decoration but retaining the origional interior design. I think Bill Sofield could take it on and do a brilliant job.

A very lovely amount of work invested into this treasure. Owned for a time (post-Woolworth) by the Reynolds family of aluminum fame and most recently Martin Carey brother of former NY State Governor Hugh Carey. (He had leased it to Pall Corporate in a 99-yr lease which obviously they successfully broke out of) Like a lot of the North Shore gilded manors it has seen its shares of ups and downs. Good to know it has been properly restored.

Hi,
In 1973 my family was vacationing on the East Coast. We went to a house that I was told belonged to the Woolworth family, I believe. It was a beautiful mansion. Peaked my interest in old homes. Can you tell me where it was and what is happening with it now?

Hi Leslie--
Maybe you are thinking of Winfield Hall in Glen Cove, New York, http://www.luxist.com/2005/09/08/winfield-hall/
It has fallen on hard times recently and as far as I know it is still on the market.

The Left Banke (of "Walk Away Renee" fame) used the Woolworh Mansion for the front and back covers of their 2nd LP. The pics were taken during 1967/68 time. Here are some pics from my website for you to enjoy:
