For years people have inscribed the band of a ring but now it is possible to personalize the diamond too. Dalumi Diamonds has a new system called
Tattoo Your Diamond that allows you to engrave a personal message along the girdle (the belt around the diamond). The message is done with a laster and can never be erased. You sign your chosen message in your own handwriting for inscription on parchment paper. The diamond goes to the IGI lab and is returned with a photograph of the engraved message on the girdle. The Tattoo Your Diamond website has a virtual diamond you can put a message on as I've done in the picture here.

I had this done to my diamond--after my great-uncle passed away I was given the ring he had given to my great-aunt (who passed away several years prior). I was his caregiver--as he was dying I kissed him on the cheek, and he said, "Kiss me again". Those were his last words. I had the diamond inscribed with "kiss me again"--I wear the ring every day--and think of him just as often. It isn't about lessening the value of the diamond--and it is a beautiful one--it was/is about making the diamond even more special.
