2006 was the
year of the caviar ban in the Caspian Sea. During that time we saw the rise of American caviar including the veneration of the paddlefish as the new future of caviar. We
even compiled a list for how to survive without Caspian caviar.
Now the UN has lifted the caviar ban, publishing quotas for five countries -- Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan. A decision of beluga, the most expensive variety, has been delayed. The sturgeon is still in peril but the countries are allowed to sell 96 tons of caviar in 2007 which is just 15 percent below the 2005 level. It's great news for caviar junkies and for the countries bordering the Caspian Sea but it is most likely depressing news for the American and European caviar producers who have enjoyed the increased attention and business over the past year.

Caviar, Good caviar is a something that I have enjoyed since childhood. The majority of the caviar that was sold in this terrorist trembling nation for the past few years was garbage unless you were paying a premium for it or you went on to the black market (yes it exists.) I really was hoping to read some comments that could provoke thought and maybe a few discussions. I really need to avoid reading the comments/opinions/bile that accompany most of the articles on this web site.

But the question is...do we feel safe eatting anything from those counties right now? Answer...NO.

First of all, the Sturgeon is an endangered animal, why make it more endangered for some stinky salty fish eggs that appeal the the "acquired taste". Just mix some salt paste with any fish guts and you've made some homemade caviar and cheaper too. By the way, do you know where the RED (scarlet) food coloring CARMINE comes from that's used in commercial frostings, cake mixes (and many other commercial food products)and red lipsticks? It is from squashing a cockroach looking bug from South America and out comes the coloring Carmine. Did you know that Este' Lauder uses whale vomit(of course, they have to kill the whale to get it)in their perfumes? Do you have any idea of the disgusting things that the manufactures do to make their products. Maybe you might try to educate yourselves on the horrible things they to to make the almighty buck. Including killing animals for things that could be artificially created. And if you object to artifically created/engineered then stop eating American corn and soy because it's been "engineered" for some time. Or take a trip to a big business chicken, pig or cow facility. Have a nice "ignorant is bliss" day.

This thread has certainly given me my daily laugh. But, in the end, who really gives a damn about caviar. Isn't this really much ado about nothing or am I missing something!

I never could afford caviar but I did steal a jar one time and thought I would throw up at the taste of it! Awful, just awful, but how many nasty tasting things become something you can hardly live without, booze, coffee, and God only knows the number of foods out there.....to each his own, just don't serve it to me, please! Save your money and give me bologna, rag bologna preferred!

Its all a matter of taste and has nothing to do with terrorism or if its a preffered "cheese wiz" spread for the rich. We hate the countries who produce it because we are pissed off at terrorism and any country that ends in a "stan" we associate with terrorism, pissed off at the rich because they have and we dont have, and associate fish eggs as "gross" because it tastes funny. Yet we love chicken, a animal that is raised so close to other chickens, they eat the fecal matter of their neighbor, we love hot dogs that are made from the ground leftovers of cows, and mayonaise thats made from whipped egg yolks(you covered that one), mustard and oil. You cant judge people by what they consume,if we did, wouldnt that make us all hypocrites?

I like fish, ergo, I like fish eggs, i.e., caviar. However, I don't usually buy the expensive stuff. I try to be tolerant of others taste or lack thereof in anything. It's all I can do to be tolerant of myself.

Hi Cin,
I have heard about that coffee but never tasted it. I don't think I would. Someone would have to sneak it in on me. That's funny...I was just telling my sister & a family friend about it not long ago. (Sister is a coffee hound.) I'd love to get some & let her try it. It's probably an arm & a leg, though.
As for caviar...tried different kinds...never acquired the taste.
How 'bout tongue? Anyone like tongue? We have to be careful around our small town during gatherings because some of the older folks make tongue sandwiches. You gotta check & be extra careful but luckily they are easy to spot (and smell.)
Just tossing in my 2 cents,
Michele
Have a nice weekend, Everyone!

Yippy! Time to flame Linda!
2. Why do all of you have to flame each other???
Because its all in good fun!
It serves no purpose,
Sure it does - its fun!
and its like road rage, it gets you no where.
Your idea of road rage must be awfully pussy-ish - when I road rage I run people the hell off the road - that's wayyyy different than mere flaming.
Try to write blog comments without flaming one another.
Why? And screw you, your not the blog police.
Let this year be a kinder, gentler nation and show real kindness while blogging.
What like a bunch of cavair eating pussies?
Besides, while you flame someone - its just words.
But fun words - don't forget the fun part - ya uptight kindness freak!

Thank the heavens above, I was completely depleted of foriegn caviar, and the mere thought of domestic anything frightened me. Than you U.N., thank you! Now, please take care of the international celebrity adoption crisis.

Honey is bee spit, red dye #40 is beetle juice (no, not Michael Keaton), most perfumes are derived from an animal's "chocolate starfish" (to quote the prolific DEEZ NUTZ), and that delicious wriggling treat we all love so much -Jello- contains cow hooves. So if fish embryos are on the menu... bon apetite!

Fish eggs do not appeal to me at $100 a pound or FREE.
I don't smoke, because my first instinct was, "not in my lungs!!" Why make your body take something that it repels? Your body is the total of YOU. Listen to it.
On cost and taste, Does a $100 bill taste any better than a $1 bill?
