2006 was the
year of the caviar ban in the Caspian Sea. During that time we saw the rise of American caviar including the veneration of the paddlefish as the new future of caviar. We
even compiled a list for how to survive without Caspian caviar.
Now the UN has lifted the caviar ban, publishing quotas for five countries -- Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan. A decision of beluga, the most expensive variety, has been delayed. The sturgeon is still in peril but the countries are allowed to sell 96 tons of caviar in 2007 which is just 15 percent below the 2005 level. It's great news for caviar junkies and for the countries bordering the Caspian Sea but it is most likely depressing news for the American and European caviar producers who have enjoyed the increased attention and business over the past year.

This was just a simple article about the caviar ban being lifted right? I was not aware people could get so mad about whether someone likes a food or not. I personally would never try caviar....but I have no hard feelings towards those who do. You people need to get a life.

Luwak coffee is one of the most expensive beverages in the world so who drinks it pray tell?
I'll stick with instant coffee, chemical fertilizer, internal combustion engines, and good ole shad and herring eggs if I want caviar. Hey, at least if I catch the damn things it's free.

To each his own. I happen to like caviar, the good stuff not the cheap crap made from whitefish and?or salmon eggs, it doesn't taste fisshy at all. Everybody has differnt tastes, in fact I hear that some people like disgusting things like lima beans and (horror of horrors) brussel sprouts!!!

All that fuss about fish eggs? To me, that is gross. You say we people in the South eat strange things. I tried Chitlins one (1) time. Never again. I ain't about to spend big bucks for something that looks like tadpoles and say it tastes great.

I fid it incredible how much foolishness/lunacy can be drawn out of people over such an unimportant subject as caviar. Get real people get a life OK. By the way Tasty Stuff there ain't nothing better than limburger cheese on rye bread.

I agree with K8 - I actually love caviar personally, but some have different tastes and so WHAT...and whether people like it or not, it IS a delicacy because it is getting to be so rare. Just get a grip people and enough with all the nonsense talk.

Luwak coffee is the best coffee for a crapuccino

The topic is caviar. Bans on the product may be for polital reasons other than environmental. However, doesn't the fish loose their life in order to harvest the eggs? I don't know much about it. But I would like to comment on some "comments". I get sick and tired of seeing things written to "shock" the other viewers and people (and I use that term loosely) like Artie who use the opportunity to comment on any subject to show his ass. Hey, Artie here's a little poem for you:
There once was a guy named Artie,
He's so full of hot air he's fartie,
If he could bottle the stuff,
Then we'd all have enough,
No fossil fuels we would need, just Artie!

I agree with LT777, Savethewhale and bella are idiots. Screw the ban, support terriorist and eat those fish into extinction. The stupid fish should adapt and hide their crappy tasting eggs better else they deserve to be eaten into extinction. I'm gonna go buy some non-american caviar today just to do my part to further endanger the fish and support terrorist fish abortionist to boot!

Why kill a large fish, take a pound of eggs out of it and throw the rest away? Eat the fish and throw out the eggs. The same people who love caviar wouldn't touch shad roe because they come from the wrong fish. Status by fish eggs. It's a strange world.
Marc Jan 5th 2007 11:57AM
Way to go Artie, you hit the nail on the head :o)

Savethewhale:
Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Iran are spelled correctly in your post but, I do not agree that all of the countries listed are terrorist nations or full of terrorists. Only Turkmenistan, which has a "President for life" and Iran have the kind of governments that would allow this type of behavior. The rest have free elections and behave themselves reasonably well. I think you were joking, if not judging by the "Savethewhale" name, I wonder if you think that anyone who eats anything not green could be considered a terrorist.
The "Way to go you fish abortionists!" comment is a little combative. I am sure you know that these fish do not mate in the mammalian sense so the eggs are not fertilized until after they are laid. Surely you know you cannot abort an egg, only a fertilized egg, embryo, or baby. I wonder if you are pro life when it comes to people?
One point you failed to make that does interests me is what happens to the big fish who make the small eggs. I hope some effort is made to market the rest of the fish. The average Beluga harvested for eggs is around twenty years old and weighs about 2000 pounds. They can live up to 150 years and weigh well over 5000 pounds. If 96 tons of eggs go to market then a huge amount of meat is potentially available for use. I have smelled caviar before and decided to leave it to the folks who like it. It would have been a waste of money for me to eat it. I hope the remaining parts of the fish are used for cat food at least, if it is not suitable for anything else.

Eve and a few others showed what a morons they are because they clearly are not intellegent enough to see the satire in mine, and several other post toward this subject and towards posting in general. She actually thought I was serious. That is part of the beauty of these posts. They show the rest of us the people who are only smart enough to make a 3rd grade fart poems. Kudos to Robert and Marc for showing they are some of the intellegent ones that are still out there.
Joseph Morton Jan 5th 2007 12:25PM
OK, now Fred has been added to the list of idiots. You don't really find the "foolishness/lunacy that can be drawn out of people" incredible. That's just something stupid people say. Right along with advising people who post said foolishness/lunacy to "get a life" while at the same time by your own post joining the ranks of those people. Even though stupid and silly, at least bella and Savethewhale have some passion to their idiotic posts. Yours is just riddled with stupidness.

The world will be a tastier and safer place with the fish eggs.

Excuse you all....1. The caviar of the world - not all of it tastes bad. Some of it is actually quite good. I know, I've tried it. Its a bit beyond my budget of course, but some is actually quite good. You just have to know which of the different types are actually good to taste!
2. Why do all of you have to flame each other??? It serves no purpose, and its like road rage, it gets you no where. Try to write blog comments without flaming one another. Let this year be a kinder, gentler nation and show real kindness while blogging. Besides, while you flame someone - its just words.
Remember the old saying: Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me. Only if you let them, can they hurt. Lets be more mature about your postings! (Imagine if you will what the world's terrorists say when they read you flaming one another over here - that we are senseless, useless and so dumb we couldn't find our way out of an outhouse) Lets show those characters how much wiser and far more intelligent we are - well above the norm.
Thank you,
Lynda LBD
