Cowardly Lion Costume Sells for $700,000
The original Cowardly Lion costume from the movie The Wizard of Oz sold to a collector over eBay earlier this month for $700,000. The 65-year old costume is made of real lion pelts and, unlike some of the other costumes from the film, only one was made. It was nearly forgotten about until 1970, when it was discovered among some other old costumes. The most recent owner had the costume restored, mounted on a flexible steel armature and displayed in a diorama depicting the yellow brick road.

Must be nice to have that kind of $$$ lying around for an old smelly furry costume...I'd rather have the ruby slippers.

If I had the money, I could buy something like that. Never cared about the movie itself, but did like the lion. I can see myself in him.

I always thought the costumes from the Wizard of Oz were in the Smithsonian. I think that is where they should be for everyone to enjoy.

I have a small collection of the wizard of oz. Its my favorite movie of all time. My children buy me stuff all the time, they also bought me a display case to put it all in. I love to find new things that I don't have its fun.

They actually did make more than one, another Lion costume is for sale out there and can be had for a cool Million, though I'm sure he'll take 700k for it. They've tried to sell these two for years many times at auction so was nice to see somebody finally buy one.
You also have to add the auctions commision price to that, so final price was a lot more than 700k.

700,00 for an old delapitated costume? Sheesh, the person who bought it must either be senile or nuts!

If you think about that movie, you realize that every episode, every character, every scene, every frame from the movie is iconic greatness. It is part of the 20th Century and of America. The Cowardly Lion costume is worth every penny.

damn i hope PETA does not find out about this.....
those AS*^%# would try to destroy it just because they are stupid
wish i had the money to have purchased it
CIndy Jan 3rd 2007 10:43PM
Wow! What a shame what they paid. There are starving people including children and you wanna waste money on a silly stinky costume? Not to mention the real lion pelt. I hope it wasn't killed just for that purpose. Senseless....

This is 1 of 2 of my all time fave movies. Wish I had enough $$$$$ to get the ruby slippers (got nail polish that looks just like it) or the witch's costume. I do a great imitation of her dying.

I sell movie gift items and Wizard of Oz is my number one seller. You wouldn't believe how many people collect wizard of oz memorabilia including myself! I have over 500 new and vintage items in my collection. Of course, I don't have anything like the lion costume. I sure would love to have it though!
