Best Spas in India

While you can always head down to a local day spa for some last minute pampering, there is nothing like getting away from it all to relax. Far, far away to an exotic and breathtakingly beautiful place, preferably. India has more than its fair share of such locations and Forbes Traveler has picked out the top ten spas there. They include Oberoi Spa by Banyan Tree at Wildflower Hall, Shimla in the Himalayas (pictured), which features "jaw-dropping views of the Himalayas"; the Quan Spa at the JW Marriott Mumbai, where you can find a $8,500 Celebrity Makeover Package, which includes luxury treatments, a stay in the Presidential Suite and a photo shoot; and the Taj Spa at The Taj Mahal Palace & Tower.

I'm amazed it's not on the Forbes top ten for India, but the Taj Spa Vyanna at the Taj Fisherman's Cove just south of Chennai is pretty amazing. If it didn't make the list then the ones that did must be mind boggling! I spent almost a week at the Taj Fisherman's Cove just before the Dec. 2004 tsunami and had the most fantastic time. I had incredible massages every day with hot oils, hot stones, various methods including Indian, Swedish, and Balinese massage therapy, herbal baths, body scrubs, body wraps, mud baths, outdoor massage pavillions, herbal aromatherapy, etc. it was just fantastic.
As was the food and the rooms. I was in a beautiful cottage by the beach with indoor and outdoor showers and baths. Taking a shower or bath under palm trees with the scent of flowers and the soft murmur of the surf was just so relaxing, especially after several months of voyaging around the world.
