Far From the Wolf, Estate of the Day

Far from the Wolf is perhaps the grandest of the summer "cottages" built on Grindstone Neck in Winter Harbor, Maine. The home was built in the early 1890s by John Godfrey Moore, who developed the Grindstone Neck area as a getaway for New York society. This gorgeous shingled home is on 4.6 acres and has 10 bedrooms, each with a private bath. The home offers both water and mountain views. It has been lovingly restored and updated and features several large fireplaces and lots of beautiful woodwork. The home is being offered furnished. Another detail is the small tea house which sits on a granite cliff at the shoreline. It is listed at $9.65 million. After the jump, a slew of mouth-watering images.

From another source ...
Mary Coffin of West Palm Beach owns the estate. She and her late husband, Dexter, undertook a major renovation in 1988 that involved both preservation and modernization of what they called “Camp Dexter.”
Mary Coffin is the estate’s sixth owner over the past 114 years. During the 1950s, the cottage was operated as an inn known as “Frenchman’s Bay Lodge.” The Coffins bought the estate in 1987.
Tax records show the estate has an assessed value of $2.2 million, with the land valued at $416,800 and the residence at $1,788,600. Annual property taxes are $13,453.

I grew in Maine and I can assure you that the view alone is worth a million bucks, they don't call it the vacation land for nothing!!

Frankly, this is not a pretty cottage home. It is dark and dreary. Cottages are cozy. I could build something many times more beautiful with considerable less money.

The rooms are too dark for me and just WHO cuts the grass on this monster? I would rather have the money and turn this place into a homeless shelter for women and kids.Wouldnt the neighbors love that?
Anna Dec 14th 2006 10:31PM
I agree, it does not look cozy and warm, and the tiger skin on the wall is disgusting. Maybe the place can be used if they decide to bring 'Dark Shadows' back.

Personal taste is what makes this "cottage" unattractive to some viewers. It is, with out a doubt, an absolutely beautiful home...and the view is second to none. I would have probably made a few different design choices, too. But, I'm certain there are people who are in complete awe over everything about it. However, I don't think of it as a "cottage". When I think of a cottage, THIS is not it. It is much smaller, of course, and cozy, and more of a shabby-chic-ee or with a rustic mix. So, as beautiful as it is, I do not see a "cottage"...not saying I wouldn't LOVE to own just a PIECE of it. It is pretty incredible and I would say "Good job, Mary"

I wonder who has the contract to keep this clean?
Mike Dec 14th 2006 10:48PM
It would still be nice to have the money to buy it.
Doug Dec 14th 2006 11:07PM
Another overpriced property, overly hopeful but unrealistic seller. The tax assesment says it all.

Looks like the perfect setting for a creepy Stephen King novel as a fog moves in from the water. Bwa Ha ha Ha !!!!
bob Dec 14th 2006 11:05PM
its a great estate yet its not appealing honestly in my opinion it would be better a local park or somthing along the lines of an outdoor recreational park

I'd expect to find some old guy with an entire tube of Brylcream in his hair and wearing a velvet smoking jacket sitting in the leather chair in front of the tiger skin on the wall. A little out dated and cheesey for my taste.

wish i had $10 mil laying around... i'd buy it!

A lot of people on here says it looks dark and dreary and such. However, close your eyes and picture what the inside on this place looks like at night with candles lit all around. That's cozy!
Lee Dec 15th 2006 12:58AM
I can picture what the inside of this house would look like at night with candles lit all around; and the only way I'd enter it, would be with a strand of garlic and a crucifix. It is, however, a breathtaking spot.
Chuck Dec 15th 2006 3:21AM
Well I'd say it's a pretty fine old place. Of course I can understand how people who are used to only painted woodwork and painted or papered walls could find the all natural dark woodwork and walls rather somber. An old mansionlike structure of this kind is hardly a place for a decorator's handiwork. But I like it and could abide in it just FINE. I'd want to have me one or two other less pretentious places to hie me off to on occasion though.

Hello, the assesed valuation says it all on the value? Obviously you do not own anything including a basic shack if you have such a lack of understanding when it comes to assesors value verses Retail or saleable market value. Suggestion: Dont waste your time on this site, do someting to excercise your realistic potential, go buy a coloring book and some crayons and pick up a word search book while you are in line at KMart, dont forget the pink snowballs for your lunchbox!!
