BMW Unveils The First Luxury Hydrogen Car
Well, somebody had to do it, and we're quite happy that the guys over at BMW decided to bolt a hydrogen/gasoline hybrid onto their luxury-performance 7-series, proving that we auto-loving Americans can have our eco-friendly cake and eat (drive) it (fast) too. The BMW Hydrogen 7 has a fully functional hydrogen engine that emits only water vapor and will get you 124 miles per fill up while the gasoline engine will get you another 311 miles on a full tank. The Hydrogen 7 will be available to a limited few in 2007, but look to 2008 for the rest of us schmucks to be able to see this bad boy on our local showroom floors. Click here to see the Governator unveil it this morning, and here for lots more pretty pictures.

Not the latest of news, however, it is a fine point to put forward. Whether BMW will achieve success with its new hydrogen 7 remains depedent upon if the company refine the technology to the point of being practical; government supports it; and commerce creates a network of stations due to a real or perceived demand.
Tough call for the near term.

Love the idea, but I'm concerned... where are we going to find the power to fuel manufacture of the hydrogen cells? It takes more energy to produce a hydrogen cell than you can derive from the cell.

I had the privilege to drive this car at the Media Days portion of the Los Angeles Auto Show in late November. It’s a sweet ride with plenty of power in hydrogen mode. Like any new technology there are plenty of obstacles that need to be overcome, but I’m glad to see that BMW has taken the initiative to put this vehicle before the public’s eye at this early date.
