Japanese Zen On Martha's Vineyard, Estate of the Day

For Thanksgiving let's do what many are, go traditionally non-traditional. The setting, Martha's Vineyard, off the coast of Cape Cod, may well be traditional but the house itself is definitely a world away from the shingled Colonial. This home is a Japanese-style home on nearly seven acres in the community of Seven Gates. What makes this house truly extraordinary is that the home was constructed without the use of a single nail from materials imported from around the globe. The six-bedroom home was designed with shoji screens which slide open to create various rooms and the entire home has an open, calm and zen feel that lends itself to meditative reflection. Other details include tranquil gardens, a guest house, tea house and an indoor saltwater pool. The home also has views of the ocean that the Pilgrims first saw as they approached this country. This home is listed at $12.5 million.

I've been in this house, and it is a nightmare...a real tear down. It's been on the marrket for over three years. But the site is amazing, and Seven Gates is the most sought-after location Up-Island, with private beaches, tennis, and services. It's very Old Money and discrete.
