Stanford White House, Estate of the Day

I believe it takes a special type of person to inhabit a Stanford White house. The creations from the architect of the Gilded Age require a certain level of fabulously grand living. After all, Stanford White designed for the top tier of society at a time when American luxury was at its zenith. This home is located in Purchase, New York and has 18 bedrooms spread out over 20,000 square feet. Because it is an older home not every bedroom has its own bathroom but if you like vintage architecture you might be willing to rough it. The details of the home are exactly what you might expect, wide rooms, most with fireplaces, beautiful original details. This esteemed estate is on the market for the first time in 100 years and she looks a bit like a museum. A loving and careful update could make this home both warm and luxurious. It is listed at $20 million. After the jump, step one, remove the red carpet.

It manages to be both beautiful and hideous at the same time. The red carpet probably does have a lot to do with that. . .

Deidre, I agree with the red carpet - dubious taste on that choice at best.
The price is rather steep for the property as it exists today even with the link to White. Other homes styled by White alone or in concert with McKim, Mead & White haven't commanded as much unless the setting [read: land] is unusual. Purchase NY while nice isn't commanding that rate.
I must say that it really doesn't strike me as being a Stanford White product. Rigid colonials (and the revival of the style by the esteemed firm) were seemingly more the expertise and style of Mead and Mckim. This house looks more like it was styled by Dwight James Baum, also working out of NYC, who crossed paths a few times with White.

That is not the only Stanford White home on the market and I do agree with the above poster that the price is a bit high. This home in Rumson, New Jersey http://www.luxuryrealestate.com/101518 on the market for $5,600,000 is another White shingle-style home

Sorry, but NO WAY I would remove the red carpet. I love it. It brings just enough dramatic color to the home.

Aiken, SC has a plethora of Stanford White homes for a fraction of the cost! Just goes to show you that location is everything -- we are undiscovered as yet.
