It doesn't do both the art and the material justice.  Then again, this ruby doesn't look like it will make high-quality gemstones anyway, given its "muddy" appearance.<br><br>The Chinese carved on jade because of its translucent property that allows light thorugh to show the carving better.  I think the ruby lacks this property, even in the high-resolution photos I have found on the site.  The carving would look as aesthetically pleasing, if not more so, on another kind of material - say, crystal or jade.
