The Chinese carved on jade because of its translucent property that allows light thorugh to show the carving better. I think the ruby lacks this property, even in the high-resolution photos I have found on the site. The carving would look as aesthetically pleasing, if not more so, on another kind of material - say, crystal or jade. But perhaps that's too common.]]>Dec 8th 2006 12:45AM
