Wedding Bands From Old Computers
There are many ways to recycle a used wedding band but not so many new wedding bands from recycled materials. Good Point Recycling has had the plan to make wedding bands from gold taken from discarded computers since 2004 and they are finally getting close to making them available for sale. I've written about the negative environmental effects of gold mining. The company has elected not to make "vanity products" from the recycled gold and the proceeds from the rings, which will cost around $5,000 each will benefit the non-profit group Earthworks which spearheads the No Dirty Gold campaign. The rings should finally be on the market around Valentine's Day in 2007.[via The Green Guide]

I think this is great idea!! Reduce, reuse, recycle!!
janet Sep 9th 2006 2:59PM
$10k for 2 wedding bands? Great idea but too expensive. The average platinum wedding band sells for around $1000 each. What do you do about resizing?
rick Sep 9th 2006 3:13PM
how much gold is in a computer, and where is it located, anyone know?
TERRY Sep 9th 2006 3:17PM
LOL!! IT'S GREAT I GUESS IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY AND WANT TO MAKE A TOKEN JESTURE ABOUT GOLD MINING. BUT GET REAL A FEW OVERPRICED WEDDING BANDS MADE FROM RECYCLED GOLD HAVE ALMOST NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ENVIROMENT OR GOLD MINING.
Gary K. Sep 9th 2006 3:20PM
Way too expensive for plain bands !! Like Janet said, you can get the very best platinum bands for a fraction of this. It's not like they are made out of some rare metal from venus or something, however, there is a sucker born every minute and I'm sure they'll find some who will pay the asking price for them.

I can buy two wedding bands and two brand new computers and not spend ten thousand dollars, so, what is wrong with this picture?
Melissa Sep 9th 2006 3:44PM
I think it's full of crap....! They say it will be sold for non profit yeah right!!!! I don't believe that for one sec. Lots of gold is a rip off in the first place! I know I won't be the stupid twit to buy one..lol
Mellie Sep 27th 2006 3:59PM
That's a pretty BIG BYTE !!!
Kathi Sep 9th 2006 4:04PM
Excuse me but traditonal weeding bands of gold go for about 200.00 each, fancy ones are more... $5,000.00 will not only buy you a nice diamond ring and both wedding bands but you'll have enough left over to rent a hall and go away for a couple nights in Niagara falls! This must be for those rich people that TALK about how they are helping the enviroment all the time... trendy but Lord knows they could put their money to better use than this!
rANDY Sep 9th 2006 3:52PM
HAHAHAHA!!!! Now your gonna have a bunch of tit heads out there tearing their pc's apart trying to find gold, give me a break
rANDY Sep 9th 2006 3:55PM
probably a gimmic by the (big oil) of the pc world because some people that read this are going to have to go buy new computers cause they went gold mining,,,hahahahaha
Cookie Sep 9th 2006 4:18PM
Ridiculous!! Another scam only the wealthy can afford. The money for the research could be better spent directly on the cause for gold mining. How much $ will this reap with the cost so high?
Barnacle Bill Sep 9th 2006 4:00PM
What a great idea! Even better is to buy my recycled finger and toenails made into rings!!! A MUCH better buy at only $3,000 each! And if you act now, you can get free razor stubble packing. On sale NOW!!!! Keep this stuff out of the landfills. Buy in quantity!
Nichole Sep 9th 2006 4:55PM
I think it is a good idea, but like some of the other comments, i have to agree that i will not be buying one for that much. Why would we buy a high priced ring to slow gold mining (wich will not happen anyways) vs. a platnum ring for $1,000? good idea in theory, but not in acctuallity.
Randy Sep 9th 2006 4:07PM
Bill i think your on to something, start saving them clippings & we can melt them down & make rings,, make a fortune
Cowboy ( Ed ) Sep 9th 2006 5:20PM
I don`t know why ya`ll knockin this GREAT e-CON-amic idea . I`ve started savin my belly-button lint to turn into wigs & scourin pads , ( also savin B/B lint keeps it from cloggin up the drain ) . Computer GOLD into wedding bands for $5G`s ea. ; What Drugs are they on ??
Janice Sep 9th 2006 5:32PM
Who in the world is going to pay $5,000 for a plain gold wedding band? They'd have to be brain dead. And as for the impact on the environment, this reminds me of the friend who was so impressed with himself for ordering checks made of recycled paper. I had to ask him, could you have found any way to recycle that would have *less* effect on saving the environment???
Lynda Sep 9th 2006 6:04PM
Anything to get a buck nowadays. I can buy diamond solitaires for that price. They gotta be nuts
Cliff Sep 9th 2006 5:50PM
That rocks! If I had 10k I would buy them. It's a good idea and a good cause. Definantly out of the normal price range, but when you consider the cost and work to reacquire the gold from a computer there's probably not much profit. Bully for them!
Ron Sep 9th 2006 6:20PM
To number 3 The gold is located on what is called the fingers on pc cards & ram chips that is the part that plugs into the mother board also some of the circit's. Also the prongs on the bottom of a pc chip are gold. But not all are gold. Im not shure if it is solid gold but I sell old cpu's on ebay as scrap gold. It is hard though to remove the gold from computers and it takes a certin type of acid I belive to remove it.
