Luxury RV Has Slideout Garage

Our siblings at Autoblog alerted us to the motorcoach from Volkner Mobil. This luxury motorcoach has a mobile garage between the axles that can hold a small car such as the BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK and the MINI Cooper. Up top it is a traditional luxury RV with a dining room, bedroom and bathroom. The new RV, which is being shown off at the International Caravan Fair in Dusseldorf, Germany has a slideout platform for the car.

It would make more sense to me to have a specially built small electric car provided with the motor home. It could have a retractable top, drive on from the back center, etc. Maybe good for 100 miles round trip, to be used for local shopping, to local events, etc. Recharge from auxillary generator in motor home.

This is cool for me. A garage, as in a 'door' beneath the main body of the vehicle that opens up to reveal a space large enough to stow family cars. Convenient.
Robert Sep 3rd 2006 6:39AM
Sometimes a person or family just wants to get away and stay .They go away for the weekend or week withut any car . So its really extra space not needed Plus you never mentioned whether it was a concept RV or not and how much it costs and when ppl can buy it.
Mort Heisler Sep 3rd 2006 9:17AM
A clever and unique idea but alas, a major waste of limited storage space.
Assuming the RV will be used for "recreational" travel, in the same cubic feet of area, one could store a rigid inflatable power boat, one or two Jet skis, one or two motor scooters or a Harley, a few bicycles ...and still have enough cash left over (relative to the cost of a BMW or Mercedes) to pay for all the fuel.
Happy trails.

As an RV owner, the concept may be appealing but with Diesel and Gas prices the way they are, it's a toy for only the very wealthy. The extra weight would bring the mileage down to about 5 mpg instead of 7. Any one who tells you different is not truthful or they do not own an RV. Add the cost of the coach and the vehicle and you'll probably be in the 750K range or maybe more. Stupid Idea. GLC.

Can you say "WASTE OF MONEY??" First of all, RV's themselves are the biggest gas guzzlers of all time, so the tree huggers can get on THEIR case and stop ticking off the owners of gas conscious SUVs like my 27 mpg Toyota Highlander. This concept of a garage to store a small car is ludicrous. If you have that kind of money to throw away, why don't you just buy a vacation home instead and keep your small car in your REAL garage instead?

Being an RV'r, I think it's a terrific idea, making it unnessary to pull a car behind. And you would always have your own local transportation to go to town and on small trips. And the car is protected from weather and theft. Great idea.I'll take one!
lynn Sep 3rd 2006 3:57PM
will be frustrating when the thing inevidebly decides to stop working and they are stuck with that thing holding there car hostage.
Jorge Sep 3rd 2006 8:20AM
How many miles per gallon? What happens when you have to drive with lots of water on the road? I believe this RV is limited and can not be driven in all kinds of weather. Please reply.
nick Sep 3rd 2006 8:26AM
Great idea.. and anyone who thinks its not a great idea is jealous that there RV can only tow a car..

A lot of people display their inadequacies by poor mouthing everything. Not everyone want the same things. Some people like the idea and can see improvements. The electric car with a retractable roof would makes good sense. The motor home does the major travel. The electric car makes short trips and can be recharged while the motor home travels. Good idea. Yeah, great idea. My Miata would fit nicely.

I must wonder.....would that garage too be filled with useless junk from my husband like the one at our home???

The slide out from under garage IS a cool concept. Why is it everyone always wants to take issue with things? No, it's not the first garage concept RV as stated, but it just might be over in Germany. Most of the US garage RV have a section carved out of the rear of the vehicle, totally different.
As to the gas milage, all comments are true, but here is the reality, those of you that have RV's haven't parked them have you? While overall sales of the industry have backed way off, how much of that is the cost of fuel v. the cost of living is a whole "other" subject.
My concern with a slide out garage may seem foolish, but what does it do to the center of gravity and ground clearance? I've seen more than one RV have a real problem due to a lack of ground clearance. Likewise, it might just be a huge help in terms of center of gravity and handling issues that RV's often have. Thoughts? Comments?
While we are on the subject of wonderful play toys that most can only dream about, check these two sites out:
(1) first why is it suggested that the cars to go under this RV are a Mercedes-Benz, BMW or a MiniCooper? The best conventional fun car to go under there if you call it conventional would be a Miata, if you want still more excitement, how about a Lotus Elise. Better yet, why settle for ground bound driving only? Check out this link: http://www.terrawind.com Heck, why settle for a motor home with a slide out garage, why not take your car, boat, and RV with you? This site tells you how.
(2)And if you really can't decide which of your toys you want to take, or don't want them blended all into one, then try this on for size: http://wwww.boaterhome.org
WARNING: THE Terrawind site is graphically intense, even with high speed it takes a bit to load, but it's worth the wait, and you will be there for a while....trust me.
Enjoy

I am guessing the people bad mouthing the idea cannot afford one of these or really has no idea what the concept of RV'ing is all about. Its a lifestyle not just something someone does. It is not about gas money or economy. For people who live this lifestyle its probably a great idea, not just for a car but for the storage. And I agree with the guy who said something about the weight and center of gravity. I would gladly have the car in there then tow it behind. So it would be nice to have comments from people who understand the reasoning behind the designs and purpose rather then just some morons who stumbled across it and have no idea what they are talking about.

It is cool one to have garage on RV. I wonder someone loves to travel and off-road. I have heard and check out new trailer that can carry pop-up camper and 2 ATVs. What have i search for the size and no such the offers in all sizes. So I will buy longest flatbed trailer and make my own design of RV and full-size off-road vehicle space. How about that ? I know many kind of recreational people like to do on vacation or weekenders..
Other hand u people saying about fuel, well there are improving in techinical with engines/transmissions to make better fuel mileage. And yes, with the weight loading can affect with fuel mileage but depend on where u going on trip like mountain driving. flatland driving..
Well, good luck to everyone who buy this new RV with garage and have a enjoyable time... thanks

Love it or hate it, its a cool idea for the super rich. I wish I could afford it! I would love to have a RV like that, but it cost 5 times what my house did!
Arthur Sep 3rd 2006 10:09AM
I like the idea of the car under the RV.it would avoid some problems with tight corners in the RV park, etc. But the side slide out is a problem for me. At the campgrounds which I have gone to: VA, ME, PA ,NY ,there never is enought slide clearance at the site for my slideouts let alone to get a car out from the side. I like the idea but have some concerns on how practical it might be in general.
As far as the gas mileage is concerned, that car will add significant weight and with the gas prices these days, it would put it out of real reach for a lot of people, except for the very well off.
