Nespresso by Porche Design
The Siemens Nespresso machine by Porche Design is a fully automatic espresso maker that does everything a the touch of a button. Traditionalists might frown on using an automatic machine instead of a manual, but the automatic has an advantage in that it is very consistent, while the performance of a manual machine relies heavily on the skill of the user. This machine has 19 bars of pressure, automatic volume control (for espresso vs cappuccino), a digital display that offers eight different languages and a steam want that can easily be adjusted to either latte or cappuccino frothing. The only real drawback is that the machine uses pods instead of real ground coffee. The list price is $1,549 Swiss Francs, or about $1,263.

Traditionalist or not, this is one very nice looking machine. (Or maybe it's just that I'm not that big on either espresso or cappucino).

The unfortunate truth is that automatics typically automate mediocrity. I know of no top barista who doesn't toss out the occasional shot as part of their quality control -- something you really can't automate.
In the end, that's an awful lot of money for very mediocre, pre-packaged, pre-ground coffee. Hopefully the thing can play mp3s as well.

It's interesting that this site makes a big deal about fully automatic espresso machines when they've been around for more than 10 years. Who wants to beat their clothes on a rock to wash them as opposed to washing them in a clothes washer. This is such a non-story.
