Another very expensive cocktail is vying for the title of the world's most expensive drink.
CNN reports that the
Merchant Hotel in Belfast, ireland says their $1,410 Mai Tai may make it into the record books. The hotel reports that it has already sold two of the drinks since they began to offer it two weeks ago. The drink is made from an extremely rare bottle of Wray and Nephew Rum. Only six of the 17-year-old bottles were created. Unlike other fancy drinks which boast gold bits or diamonds, this one earns its price based strictly on ingredients and the fact that when the bottle is gone the drink will no longer be available.

As a former bartender I have had my share of pricey liquor, but this one is way out of my price league. I think the most expensive shot I have ever consumed was 125 dollars a shot. Louis 13th. cognac. i did not pay for it which made it taste even better. Johnny blue another pricey shot. good scotch. the wray and nephew rum is good quality. http://celebrity-dirt.blogspot.com

...and we care because we wish we could be rich and so very self indulgent?

I'd much rather have 705 $2 mai tais.

All this does is prove how ignorant and wasteful some people really are. Regardless of how expensive the rum is, the people that bought the Mai Tai couldn't even
TASTE the rum. It could've been any kind of rum. When you mix a liquor in with juice or other mix it really makes little difference on the actual taste or caliber of the liquor as it mostly tastes like the mixer. People are such fools. I used to always get a crack up when people would come in and order an absolute or stoli screw driver. What is the point to paying for something you can't even taste? I guess it makes them feel more important.

I would have been more impressed if they donated that money to charity. Sad and wasteful.

The best Mai-Tais I have known is from a recipe given me from the bar-tender at the Noah's Ark tavern in Missouri 30 years ago. 1oz. light rum, 1oz. dark rum, 1oz. Curacua, 1/2oz Creme De-Noyeou, 1/2oz. Grenadine, 1/2oz sugar syrup. Shake and pour on crushed ice. Wonderbar. Ron.

$1410.00 Mai Tai? At my bar we will sell it to you for $7.50. $1410.00 is about the cost of my monthly rent, car payment and car insurance all together.

You are all missing the point of this! The point is to BE self indulgent! Haven't we all gone out and spent money on something we wanted but didn't need just to be wasteful? I am usually a frugal person but every now and then I let go just to remember that life is not all about what we MUST do but sometimes about what we WANT to do. If I had the bucks to buy this drink I might just do that just to say that I had!

All these other people are jealous!
Kudos.

$1,400 for a Mai Tai? For that price, the bartender better be going home with me. Oh, and he better be Nick Lachey.
Joey Aug 27th 2006 5:24AM
While the price of this drink is very stupid, I disagree with the idea that any liquor with a mixer is the same. The difference between drinking good liquor and crap is a giant sized headache the next morning. If you don't agree, have some Pepe Lopez and then call me.
Susan Aug 27th 2006 6:23AM
$1410. for Nick Lachey to be your bartender, to funny!

This is one of those tiresome stories that panders to insecure middle-class people fascinated by money and all the stupid things you can by with it.
If we were speaking about a rare Champagne, that is one thing........but were talking about rum. Something that is preferred by people who have limited taste and scope.

I am so jealous. That Mai-Tai would cost me well more than the $1400 price tag, it would include Air-Fare, Hotel, car, etc..... But a chance at the Wray & Nephew Rum, that would be one of those Once-in-a-Lifetime experiences....
And to those of you that don't understand why someone would be willing to shell out that kind of dough on one Mai-Tai, you obviously have never had a good Mai-Tai.
