Its all email, the only thing that gets mailed is the rent.

Caller ID System: No intelligent college student has a landline. It's all about the cell phone. Landlines are useless (and pricey) for a college student.

Wireless Mouse: Ok, this is useful. Just make sure to get rechargable batteries.

iPod Alarm Clock: This may work for girls, but guys need a stereo system. The wattage on these things can't handle a room full of drunk kids, and lets face it, thats all that matters.

An actual dorm room has a Twin bed, every college student upgrades to a Full or Queen when they move off campus. Spending good cash on twin sheets is just bad money sense. Good sheets are nice, but later in life.

Digital Photo Receiver: What?! The guys don't care about pictures and girls like to hang them all over their room, not connect them to a computer to see one that changes every x minutes. Maybe the parents want their kid to send THEM photos through this thing. But college is really all about drunk photos, which don't go over well with parents that think their little princess wasn't THAT girl puking on herself at the PGP party last weekend.

TriPort Headphones: These are nice if you don't mind people that walk by your room thinking that you are about to go on a space mission. These things are HUGE.

Vintage Vending Machine: Wow, it holds cans of soda. But can it chill a handle of vodka? Um, nope. Well congrats you just spent 150 dollars on something that takes up valuable space and cant hide my booze.

iPod Backpack: A big backpack that allows you to change songs. Riiiight. I'll stick with my North Face backpack.

Bathrobe: This is a 50/50 item, because robes are practical in the winter time, however, if your room is crazy small it may not be able to dry, creating mold and just making your life suck that much more. However, if it works for your room, then go for it. Plus, it makes the guys feel like pimps.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that 90% of this list is just crap. Cheers :)

mmr

Comments on Little Luxuries for Dorms

Businessweek recently had a similar feature but concentrated more on tech toys: http://images.businessweek.com/ss/06/08/backtoschool_dorm/index_01.htm?chan=search

cmdr_bond

Comments on Little Luxuries for Dorms

I have to agree with the guy who thinks this is 90% crap... I only have one question: Why? Unless you've got a rich mommy and daddy spoon-feeding you through college, this stuff is kind of pointless and a waste of money that could be spent on better things - like, oh, say, tuition, books, savings? Do yourself a favor: buy a $15 bathrobe from K-mart, drink your sodas out of a box in the fridge, get a $10 clock radio, and put the $400 you just saved into a savings account. Well-meaning parents are just easing their pain of having a child move away. If you plan to purchase items for your child's dorm, I would suggest you have your child make a list of what he/she feels are the necessities. My freshman year, I lived in a dorm modeled after an efficiency-style apartment - we had our own kitchenettes, walk-in closets, and full-size refridgerators. So I definitely know luxury. Even in my more modest dwellings this time around, NEVER IN MY LIFE WOULD I EVEN WANT SOMEONE to spend this kind of money on what is, quite frankly, utter putrid crap. Who put this together? Ms. Weston, you either went to a very well-to-do university, or they've been paying you too much under the table for this nonsense.

Luxuries? All these things do is take up space, waste my time, and aren't even worth half the money.

The "luxury" that irked me the most was the bubblegume PINK caller ID. Don't you know that most phones *come* with caller ID right on the phone or the base (if it's cordless). And that comes all for $20-$30!!! It's not a luxury to have to look at a separate machine to know who is calling and then pick up the phone, not to mention wasting valuable cramming/drinking/television-watching/partying time!! What an inconvenience.

If you want to talk about luxuries, try:

1. adding other furniture (chairs, couches) - thereby increasing the functionality of your room from a house cubicle to a semi-living space;

2. central air conditioning that is individually controlled;

3. a rug so a linoleum floor with a temperature of near absolute zero doesn't greet you every morning;

4. CDs, floppy disks, zip drives, and an external hard drive to make sure the hard work you did on your papers doesn't go into the digital graveyard;

5. having an awesome computer/laptop to begin with (if you're talking about luxuries, try the 17" MacBook Pro w/ Intel Core Duo - it's around $2500!!!);

6. a good TV - like a plasma.

7. how about a candy/coffee vending machine??? goodness knows that college kids are up all night, whether it be for papers or parties. You've got to stay awake SOME kind of way (unless you want to push them to harder drugs);

8. What about that video game rocker chair that also plays music from your iPod, as well as sends vibrations from the DualShock controllers throughout the entire chair?

There. And i've only promoted three things. at least i know they're worth the money, and your college student will be greatful for it (they also wouldn't mind you paying tuiton too, parents!).

Morgan

Comments on Little Luxuries for Dorms

Just remember that those "nice" items look nice to everyone else too and it's not uncommon for posessions to "walk" out of your dorm room. Take my advice and don't have anything that you would be upset about losing.

Jill

Comments on Little Luxuries for Dorms

Okay, first off... why don't they feature bargain items at places like Wal-Mart and such for freshmen in new dorms. Most college students and their parents aren't really in the position financially to support extreme luxeries such as this. I think we have to redefine this world's definition of luxury. Not to be extreme, but running water and electricity are "luxuries." I am, by no means, too old school. I just like anyone else enjoy technology and such. But haven't we taken things a little far?? I think this originally posting is outrageous. I mean look at the title, "Little Luxeries for Dorms." Little? Since when is a $190 robe a little expense? I'd much rather see how much you can do with a dorm room for the cheapest price. I love fooling people into thinking I spend a lot of money on decor and such, when really I just don't buy the first thing that looks great. I work it and stretch my dollars!

Another Normal College Student

Comments on Little Luxuries for Dorms

Most parents struggle to pay tuition and room and board. Parents: your kids DO NOT NEED most of this junk. Expensive stuff just is a temptation for theft.
Your kids need to learn to get along with a minimum of material luxuries at this stage in their lives. It frees up the mind!
College is not like high school. Time is the most valuable commodity.
I once met a rich young man with an awesome collection of stuff he traveled with: (He was an expert birder.) A battered quality telescope. Not to be confused with regular Sony, Sony ES is equivalent to Denon or Harman/Kardon. Puts iPod's, and many other systems for that matter, so-called "excellent" sound quality to absolute shame. But, do I party with it? Well, I guess so if that includes reviewing Enya or Mozart at my personal leisure on uncompressed CDs and LPs. But, it's awful fun to play videogames and watch great movies in digital surround sound as well. (And, it's defense is, well, "Kimber" in a private apartment. As for walking out with it, you could do it, but it'd be awfully conspicuous to be carrying out a 50 LBS. receiver, among other things, and that's if you manage to undo all the connections in time without being caught and have a new hole to spit gum out of.)

Speaking of portable, I'd rather use my Sony NetMD player. If the player breaks, my collections are on seperate discs and not on a hard drive within the player. All I'd have to do is buy a new player and not fret over a lost collection and/or waiting weeks for Apple to fix/replace my iPod.

As for a clock radio, all I want is something that will wake me! My $10 Sony clock radio is more than sufficient.

As for phones, if you already have cellular, it's all you need. The only choice in this case would be CDMA (Verizon, Alltel, Sprint PCS) or GSM (Verizon, T-Mobile, Vodaphone [if you're not in North America]). The only landlines you'd need are for cable and broadband internet (and if you have broadband, as tempting as it may seem, DON'T get VoIP, such as Vonage; in addition to being a waste of money, you'll lose your phone service if you lose your broadband for whatever reason). As for my phone, if you're thinking that I've got a Sony Ericsson, good guess but, no: Motorola.

For computers, heck, I've built my own. I have an old Dell as a DOS machine, which is strictly for old DOS games. The WinXP, on the other hand, is a no-label Athlon XP that I built up myself. The laptop: an old Toshiba Pentium III, which gets the job done. - Reinhart

Reinhart
