944 Fifth Avenue, Estate of the Day

We got the tip on this apartment through the New York Observer and what a prize pad it is. The home which formerly belonged tothe late Lilyan Spitzer Lindemann, takes up the entire fifth floor and has treetop Central Park views from the living room, library and master bedroom. The private elevator foyer leads into a reception gallery with marble floor and cloakroom with powder room. The drawing room has a ornate fireplace and Rococo style paneling. French doors open to the adjacent library with Louis XV style paneling and there is a large dining room also off the entrance gallery. The master bedroom also has a fireplace, marble bathroom and large closets. There are three additional large bedrooms and a fifth bedroom created from two of the original five maids' rooms. The kitchen has a butler's pantry and there is a staff dining room as well as a double and a single maid's room with bathroom. It is listed at $18.9 million. After the jump, the very definition of the word grand.

If millionaires and people of government would stop wasting money on worthless property, and start investing their money into the education systems then the children growing up today would know that an investment like this is a big ripoff.

My place in Miami is much more chic. This place is closer to the villa back home. In a word, boring.
renee Aug 14th 2006 11:43PM
I was somehow expecting more from the place. It looks more like an old copy of some architectural magazine. Plus, did anyone else notice that the maids' rooms have no closets--while the owners have "walk-ins"--and the maids have to share ONE Bathroom!!! I don't think so.

that looks really old and id rather live in a more high tech studio apartment and drive a few ferrari's and a few bentley's,and also have alot of money in my pocket to eat alot and to travel and live elsewhere, afterall the 5th floor is lame.

It might be dated but it shows its Historical Value and I like that. Antique(s) at its finest. Rich and Famous have to buy their companionships for happiness but they dont have to worry what bills have to get paid. Us lower class almost poverty are strapped with bills and we still have friends no matter what. Doesnt it sound twisted? LOL... go figure!!!

The real estate brokers are a couple of pretentious fops to try to pass this off as first rate, part of the don't know any better set.
I too loved the powder room behind the coat closet (which is 3 feet wide, hardly a "cloak room" - I have friends with a cloak room in their town house. You can hang coats on three sides)). It must be convenient to the bedroom with the bar in it though. Servant's dining room? Would that be the hallway?
One of the maid's rooms is 7 feet wide. Oh, and to get from the master bedroom to any other room in the apartment you have to pass through the most public space, nice touch. It has a Vegas feel to it.
This one is a loser!
This is a poorly hobbled together rabbit warren, a gut job! They'll get 8 million tops from some russian mafioso who the real estate agents will probably both blo....!

I lived in NYC for 5 years...It is crap like this apartment with its' over-inflated value that makes me glad I left! Zapata, the great mexican revolutionary, said that you could put a monkey in a suit, but it would still be a monkey...Have Americans lost their senses when it comes to money? Does anybody in NYC, Boston, San Francisco, etc.. really think a gaudy (and I am being generous here)apt like this is worth 19mm???
Of course they do! And you know why? Because they also think that Paris Hilton has talent and Donald Trump is a genius....Get a grip people!! I bet that who ever gets "suckered" into buying this place has never worked a day in their life.

Very classy and refined. BEautiful to say the least, However after the mortgage, who could afford a cook, maid and butler??
Semone Aug 15th 2006 12:41AM
I hate it!!!!!! It looks like old money trying to be so spectacular when really they have no taste at all! Oh but it is an antique! Must be worth it :-P

Give me a nice house on the sandy beaches of Lake Huron or Lake Michigan in Michigan and I would be VERY Happy for the rest of My life. I never have liked living in a big City, lots of concrete, skyscrapers and smog- NO Thank You ! I grew up at a resort on Lake Huron and there is nothing like Peace, Serenity and Beauty.
Jennifer Aug 15th 2006 12:46AM
Hmmm....Just buy it. Then rent it out to princes for 10,000 a day....redecorate it. Hire someone to change the decor a tad and freshen it up..hahah...and put in state of the art technology. Get it on the cover of a magazine....Rent it out to people for elegant parties...so many endless possibilities!

Hey Barbie, snce when is being wealthy synonymous with having a substance abuse problem? Jealous much?
Barbara Aug 15th 2006 1:11AM
ARE YOU KIDDING?????????????? 19 million.....I would never spend even 1 million for that dwelling....If I have 19 million to spend it would be on a small island with peace and tranquality.... and give many millions away to help the abused children and animals of the world... they deserve it more that any piece of land or brick....

I wish I had 19 million to blow on an apartment. Heck, wish I had just a million period! I can't even afford my college education. Why spend so much money on a apartment?
sandi k Aug 15th 2006 1:18AM
Some are fortunate to have this kind of money. Myself, well what little i have i try to share with my loved ones. Lifes too short to hord so much extravegance. Id be happy with a 100 bucks right now.

Those with terrible things to say about this deceased person's home, speak out of jealousy. For I, while sitting in my apartment that costs me a mere 1300.00 a month, can see the beauty of a Manhattan apartment with park views. Let me also explain to all of you who had better things to do with thier 19 mil, so did the deceased, I'm sure. One does not typically have 19 million in thier pocket and spend it all on one piece of real estate. They have already paid for thier kids college, they have a house on the beach, and a condo in Vegas. They also have plenty of money in the bank that has probably made more money in the time it took me to write this than I have made all year.
radi hashish Aug 15th 2006 1:26AM
um...the person buying, most likely will have a lot more than 19 million.
Kathleen Aug 15th 2006 2:00AM
All I could think of was being in the living room and needing to use the bathroom -- don't think I'd make it to such an out of way place.
Place is not for me, but fun to look at.
Tammy Aug 15th 2006 2:01AM
Oh My God!
What is wrong with people today!
Instead of purchasing a home for 19 million dollars maybe they should think of their fellow Americans barely getting by on working 60-80 hours a week (and still not making ends meet)(not having enough money for health care benefits). Donate some of your millions to the hard workers. Maybe your next home would only cost let's say 5 million dollars (and would probably be better looking and more comfortable), how many people do you think can be helped with 14 million dollars!!!! Amazing how greedy people have become!
God bless all the hard working people just trying to get by!
