944 Fifth Avenue, Estate of the Day

We got the tip on this apartment through the New York Observer and what a prize pad it is. The home which formerly belonged tothe late Lilyan Spitzer Lindemann, takes up the entire fifth floor and has treetop Central Park views from the living room, library and master bedroom. The private elevator foyer leads into a reception gallery with marble floor and cloakroom with powder room. The drawing room has a ornate fireplace and Rococo style paneling. French doors open to the adjacent library with Louis XV style paneling and there is a large dining room also off the entrance gallery. The master bedroom also has a fireplace, marble bathroom and large closets. There are three additional large bedrooms and a fifth bedroom created from two of the original five maids' rooms. The kitchen has a butler's pantry and there is a staff dining room as well as a double and a single maid's room with bathroom. It is listed at $18.9 million. After the jump, the very definition of the word grand.

I thought I lived in a wonderful Victorian in Pacific Heights (SF) but WOW does this take the cake. Definately a breathtaking view. But one question, does it come fully furnished? I love the rugs...

With just over 3300 square feet to maintain, do I really need THREE maids for that???
CK Dexter-Haven Aug 6th 2006 9:55PM
DJ,
If you have to ask that question, this apartment isn't for you...
Dave Aug 14th 2006 8:34PM
boy wouldnt it be nice to blow 19 million on an apartment!
John T. Aug 14th 2006 8:36PM
Look at that master bath! Oh my god is it a 30 inch
vanity? Wow! 20 million and you get one of the most
rudimentary baths in America. The kitchen doesn't look
much better from the floor plan. I know, Location, Location. But this place needs a serious remodel. It's just too dated.

Definitely a place to really relax and enjoy yourself(not).

I agree it's a great place, but I too think it is dated. It's not very homey either. Doesn't the library have books?
Caro Ballard Aug 14th 2006 8:51PM
Where do you think they do the laundry...or is it all sent out?
Joan C Aug 14th 2006 8:59PM
I have a condo on the Atl Cty boardwalk facing the ocean...wouldn't trade it for this place. It's dated looking & nothing beats an ocean view....EVER!

I EXPECTED MUCH MORE FOR THAT PRICE. I WOULD WANT IT COMPLETELY REDECORATED AND REFURNISHED. IT'S NOW SHOWING AS TOO RETRO, DOWDY, AND DEPRESSING.
Judi Aug 14th 2006 9:00PM
I would buy it and use it a home for people down on their luck. If you have tried to make it and life has not been great, then this is a place for you to tell your story and live in one of the bedrooms. I would want to have people of all ethnic groups and plenty dogs and cats from the shelter. It will bring life into that place and show that everyone should have a right to experience living like that. Just send money to Aol, and we can buy it. 19 million people putting in one dollar.

19 million? OMG i wish I had one million. Me and my husband have worked so hard to just pay our 180 a week rent and clear our over due debts. If I had 19 million i wouldnt spend it on this place. I would by a coupld 500k homes pay my debts, get a college fund for my daughter, invest a couple million and give most of it away. who needs more than 5 million dollars???? I could live off of one for a very long time and save more money in the mean time. Oh how I wish money would come knocking on my door. Some people are so lucky.
Gary Aug 14th 2006 9:12PM
For 19 million it had better have a gourgeous view of the sunset over the ocean in Maui on about 30 acres of it's own.

While it may seem incredible in price, the prize (the apartment) is that much more incredible. If you do not live in NYC, perhaps you do not get it....but a park view...is PRICELESS....otherwise, you run from the closet to the bathroom and PRAY nobody sees you!!!
Gary Aug 14th 2006 9:18PM
Concrete, Traffic , & Smog ... I think not !!
robert Aug 14th 2006 9:18PM
What, no place to park the cars? To the purchaser of this ostentatiously garish dump I have this to say, a fool and his money are soon parted.
Barbie Aug 14th 2006 9:20PM
I agree with the recent writer, if I had that amount of money, it wouldn't be spent on an apartment. I would buy each of my children homes, and make sure they were taken care of also. I would like a modest three bedroom with a master suite and hot tub outside of bedroom with pool in back yard. I am not hard to please. There are just too many people in this world that have nothing, and the rich just flaunt their money and use it for drugs and alcohol. What a shame.
Karen Summers Aug 14th 2006 9:20PM
I'm sorry, but for that kind of money, I want a bigger bathroom than the Maid's. And the bath behind the coat closet, what a concept!! I'll spend my money traveling.
Gary Aug 14th 2006 9:23PM
As Steve Martin's character Nathan Johnson said in the movie "The Jerk", ( You know that stuffed camel in the red velvet billiards room that I always wanted) ? Well.. I've got that too.
Talk about gaudy !!!

It is the ultimate in tackiness.
It is going to take at least another 20 million just to bring it up to the level that it needs to be at for what it is. It has comfortable dimensions for a dowdy New York flat, but the owner has failed to maintain the level of opulence expected of a Fifth Avenue address. Those low, flat ceilings are atrocious, for starters.
