Rolls-Royce, The Car Of Choice

Our friends over at Autoblog have uncovered a new survey that places Rolls-Royce at the top of the Ultra-Luxury car heap. Besting last year's top name, Maybach, Rolls-Royce scored higher in quality, uniqueness, and exclusivity than its German competition. This comes as no surprise the countless Rolls fanatics that simply cannot imagine driving anything other than a British-made behemoth. With the stellar Phantom and soon-to-come convertible, Rolls-Royce stands to maintain its edge with great innovation and a tradition of excellence that has made it famous all these years.

British made:S
quote from Wikipedia:
"The aluminium spaceframe body is built in a BMW plant in Dingolfing, Germany and the V12 engine in Munich."
Only Final Assembly I'd say...

looks bitchin' though (that should be said)

I still think the Maybach is the superior vehicle.
What the survey really is about is "Uniqueness" and "Exclusivity" rather than quality. The Maybach outsells the Rolls and so you lose the 'exclusivity'.
It seems a rather pointless survey; 'everyone' owns a 911 becase they are great cars, doesn't take away from mine. But I suppose if you're buying a vehicle to be part of an exclusive club rather than because you like the car, the Rolls is for you.

Being born and raised in England , and well acquainted with the grand traditions and hard to match quality of the true British Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Lotus , Aston Martin , amongst others back in the 50's, 60's, 70's, and perhaps the 80's. They stood alone , unmarred by foreign intervention, take overs , or just plain meddling , and other technical additions or parts, that distorted if not ruined the whole image , design, and sleek styling long lost. Its sad to say , just looking at today's Roll's Royce, much like an aluminum box car . Ridiculous.!!

Can I have one?

While I love the Bentley, Rolls and Jags, I fell in love with a Vanden Pas Princess as a kid. My parents owned one. We had one of only 6 in the US at the time. What a treat. Now I only buy UAW made cars as a supporter of Unions.

I remeber the British that brought us MG,Austin Healey, and Triumph. Nice cars if you are a mechanic and don't mind bouncing all over the car, when it ran. And of course back in their day nobody had metric tools to work on them!

They have hit the nail on the HEAD! The Rolls Phantom is "THE" auto to have. It is above all the rest, I know...!
Guy Blankinship Jul 22nd 2006 5:17PM
The car does look boxy. The joke though is the aged Cessna 310 in the background. This plane was last produced in the early 1980's and would not be worth as much as the auto. To show comparable class, they should show a King Air or a small jet in the background. This is called continuity.
bill Jul 22nd 2006 6:06PM
doug: mgs, jags of 50's and 60's didn't require metric tools, only english (except for transmission work which required whitworth spanners!
Jim Jul 22nd 2006 6:30PM
I dont think its all that!
CW Jul 22nd 2006 6:35PM

Some of the nice people in the UK seem unhappy about the German influance in the new Rolls. They seem to have forgotten that while many old English cars were beautiful to look at. They were undependable, plain and simple. They had all kinds of fun stuff for us yanks to deal with. Lucas electric's. Positive ground, many had Amal Carbs which were nothing short of a nightmare to work on. The bolts were not metric, there were not SAE they were British Standard, or Wentworth Anyone remember the 4 day work week in the UK in the 70's? We thought all the parts were in England and we just couldn't get them. Until we started getting calls at my Dads Triumph Dealership from folks across the pond looking for parts.
All in all the English made a nice car until the late 60's. When there economy went in the crapper so did the quality of there cars. Remeber the TR7, or even worse the TR8.
If the Germans hadn't steped in there wouldn't be any English cars left. So be happy that your cars still look English but run German.
But personnally, I still only buy and drive American.
Thats why I won't buy a new Mopar product.
GG Jul 22nd 2006 7:15PM
Oh and to the comment above about the green jag, being a car, yeah and it's also a decent car now because it's a Ford under the skin. The Brits could make em pretty but they couldn't make them run or handle.
holly Jul 22nd 2006 7:28PM
To GG: What car made in America is actually all "American?" Even Harley Davidson has foreign made parts. I personally will stick with the Singer: It says you "made" it because you know class, and it is definately unique to all vehicles.
jim Jul 22nd 2006 7:38PM
why would any one want to waste that much money on this??? thing???
