Singer Castle, Estate of the Day
Singer Castle on Dark Island in the St. Lawrence Seaway is the home which was designed for the president of the Singer Sewing Machine Company by architect Ernest Flagg. The impressive home has 28 rooms with 13 fireplaces. The granite stone castle is five stories, with stone spiral stairs, copper gutters, towers, a dungeon, and secret passageways. The home also has a wine cellar, a library, armor suites and antique weaponry. The home originally cost $500,000 to build way back in the early 1900s but it will run you a bit more now: it is listed at $22 million but would probably require at least a few million to get it into shape. Of course it is open now as a tourist spot so you could probably make some of the money back if you are interested in playing host. But why not just turn it into your own secret lair, it already has the dungeon ready and waiting for your enemies...

$22 million? Come on, this property languished for YEARS and YEARS with heavy marketing in every glossy real estate magazine you could think of in the 1990's. Only when it finally was offered at a firesale price (well under $2M) did it move - and even then it appears to profiteers who did little to improve it.
It is beautiful and spectacular, but who really wants to have a massive white elephant in the Thousand Islands in 2006?

Vladi of Vladi Private Islands owns this Castle Island. Vladi bought it a few years ago for under US$3 Million and is now selling it for US$22 Million... Now that's a mark up! I wonder why Vladi is not selling this on his own site www.vladi.de. Maybe he is embarrassed of the 19 Million Dollar mark up? Way to go, capitalism rules!

Actually Farhad Vladi of Vladi Private Islands bought singer castle (dark island) for only 1.7 Million. Here is evidence of this: http://www.allbusiness.com/periodicals/article/945802-1.html

Singer Castle on Dark Island was purchased in 2001 by an investment group, of which Vladi Private Islands is a minority partner, for under US $2.5 million. Since then, substantial investments exceeding US $10 million have been made in the property, including the entire renovation of the castle interior, exterior, roof and other outbuildings, the creation of a successful tourist and wedding location hire business, as well as the purchase of a mainland property. The island and castle are now for sale through the exclusive listing agents, Sothebys International Realty, who have independently valued the property at US $22 million.
