American Express Butterfly Card

American Express has recently introduced Butterfly, for Gold Card holders. The Butterfly card is a foldable credit card that comes in a tiny case. It is completely free and linked back to the main Gold Card account of the Amex holder. The "signature accessory" is intended to give some cache to carrying a Gold Card, but it is also a way to minimize what you carry. American Express points out that it can be used as an accessory or key ring, as a chain or loop can be easily attached to it. It looks much more stylish than just about all other keychain credit cards.

Cool design, but until the DMV makes a folding drivers license to fit in the case with it, I don't see the advantage.

I just received this "free gift" from AMEX - and I must admit that it baffles me. It is a novel idea to have a folding card in a little case. But the case provided is large and heavy - relative to anything I want to put in my pocket with keys (at least for a guy). A better idea would have been an ultra tiny case for the little card. I offered the card to my wife, but she wasn't interested either.
I also don't like the idea of having ANOTHER AMex card and account number. I just got used to my latest gold card number; my old card expired and now I have to update all my recurring charges with the new expiration date of the new card - why would I want another card with another expiration date to worry about?
I have cut up the little bug and tossed it away. Not such a hot idea guys - sorry. Did the marketing geniuses check with any real customers before they activated this promotion?
