Lohan Sees Hypnotist for Shopping Problem - Maybe
Lindsay Lohan has admitted to having a shopping problem and has either sought professional help or not (side note: Either way, by no means should a hypnotist be refereed to as "help." Perhaps "gimmick" or even "new age fluff.") Lohan's rep denies the star is seeing a hypnotist, but does admit to Lindsay "loving clothes." The teenager has spent over $1,000,000 in the past year on clothing and accessories, and has so much crap she can't wear it all. Sounds like of all the problems Lohan is reported of having, a shopping "addiction" may be the least of her worries.[Via The Superficial]

[pay close attention to point #6]
Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depressive Illness)
Clinical Features
A cyclical mood disorder in which episodes of major depression are interspersed with episodes of mania or hypomania; 1% of the population is affected. Most pts initially present with a manic episode in adolescence or young adulthood, but 20% present with a major depression. Antidepressant therapy is usually contraindicated in pts with a cyclical mood disorder because it may provoke a manic episode. Pts with a major depressive episode and a prior history of "highs" (mania or hypomania—which can be pleasant/euphoric or irritable/impulsive) and/or a family history of bipolar disorder should not be treated with antidepressants but must be referred promptly to a psychiatrist.
With mania, an elevated, expansive mood, irritability, angry outbursts, and impulsivity are characteristic. Specific symptoms include: (1) increased motor activity and restlessness; (2) unusual talkativeness; (3) flight of ideas and racing thoughts; (4) inflated self-esteem that can become delusional; (5) decreased need for sleep (often the first feature of an incipient manic episode); (6) decreased appetite; (7) distractability; (8) excessive involvement in risky activities (buying sprees, sexual indiscretions). Pts with full-blown mania can become psychotic. Hypomania is characterized by attenuated manic symptoms and is greatly underdiagnosed, as are "mixed episodes," where both depressive and manic or hypomanic symptoms coexist simultaneously.
Untreated, a manic or depressive episode typically lasts for 1–3 months, with cycles of 1–2 episodes per year. Risk for manic episodes increases in the spring and fall. Variants of bipolar disorder include rapid and ultrarapid cycling (manic and depressed episodes occurring at cycles of weeks, days, or hours). In many pts, especially females, antidepressants trigger rapid cycling and worsen the course of illness. Pts with bipolar disorder are at risk for psychoactive substance use, especially alcohol abuse, and for medical consequences of risky sexual behavior (STDs).

From some of the pics of her I have seen I would say she does enjoy shopping, a lot. She has several other interests and perhaps hypnosis can bring those to the surface and curb the shopping. Although her sexual joys if brought to the top might be more troublesome. More enjoyable for some of us but not to her as a public figure.
I think she is addorable and would love to get together with her, and hope that if she does have a problem can get it taken care of.

LuxBlogger makes a hilarious point.

To many people who have turned to hypnosis with a serious need to change, it is seen as nothing short of miraculous. Please don't confuse scientific hypnosis with "stage" hypnosis or "hollywood" zombie-style hypnosis. For several years now, there has existed brain imagery evidence which points to the fact that a person under hypnosis is actually in a particular state of mind that bypasses the usual decision-making neural pathways. As such, the hypnotized person has a heightened suggestibility, that is, she more readily accepts new ideas into her usual, automatic thought patterns. There is nothing "New Age" about it, either. In fact, hypnosis is not new at all. Modern scientific hypnosis can be traced to the Abbe Faria in the late 18th century who called it "lucid sleep". Please don't dismiss this remarkable tool for change, so available to the person who suffers from destructive thinking beyond her reach. Thanks for the opportunity to post.

A hypnotist can be, in many way a real help. Hypnotism is a real science, quite old actually as said Mr Blumenthal. Some people did managage to quit smoking just by seing a hypnotist a few times...
Anyway, about lohan I don't think we can talk about a real "shopping addiction", take all her money and I think she will no longer have this "addiction"... She has too much money and time on her hand, that's all...

So many of us could be told to have a shopping problem, we use to earn 30 times more money than we do know but we still love to shop and buy want we want...it is a problem.

The author referring to hypnosis as a gimmick and 'new age fluff' clearly has no understanding of what hypnosis is all about. Used correctly, hypnosis has enabled people to overcome fears, addictions, lose weight, combat stress and anxiety and address hundreds of other issues. Interestingly, it actually goes back much further than the 18th century. Ancient Egyptians practiced a form of hypnosis in their dream temples. In pre-anaesthesia days, operations were successfully carried out under hypnosis and patients mortality rate was substantially less than those operated on without hypnosis.

As a certified hypnotherapist I take issue with the "fluff" and "gimmick" comments. I have helped scores of people with problems ranging from habit control to dealing with obsessive compulsions such as out-of-control shopping.
Hypnosis is a very real science and should be treated as such.

I'm a psychologist in New York, and the editor of the book, I Shop, Therefore I Am: Compulsive Buying and the Search for Self (Aronson, 2000). I've recently launched the Stopping Overshopping Program, which is the result of 12 years of specialized research and training. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that if Lindsay Lohan does have this serious problem, and it certainly appears as though she does, that the work of my Program would help her eliminate her overshopping behavior and generalize to her eating disorder as well. Now...if only I could get her a copy of it!
