Dean and Deluca Sweet Couture, (Edible) Handbag of the Day
We are kicking off a week of edible purses in preparation for Mother's Day, which is only two weeks away.
Fortunately, there is still plenty of time to order one of these treats if you know it is something that Mom will like.
And when you're combining fashion and food, what's not to like?
Today's purse is the Sweet Couture Cake from Dean and Deluca. It is a four-layer vanilla butter cake that sandwich a decadent chocolate filling. The bag itself, which covers the cake, is made out of a pink fondant embossed with a crocodile-skin pattern. All the "leather" trimming is hand done. Price: $150.

jane May 6th 2006 10:56AM
This is ridiculous...I can make fondant, tint it pink and yellow too.....and then buy a real purse(or make it)
birdwoman May 6th 2006 11:00AM
what a waste of money!!!!! who wuolod want to buy a purse just to look at it or eat it!!!!!! either buy a cake or a purse, but not both mixed together. what a waste!!!!
Gp May 6th 2006 11:08AM
Unique idea.....But just way too overpriced for a cake!? This isn't a once in a lifetime event - just Mother's Day. Maybe you should focus on a more reasonable price...say $50.00!!?? Or just be more cost conscious for the average American family - particularly for children of any age. It's cute, but too unrealistic for that price. Are the buckles gold/gold plated??!! Should be for that price. IT'S JUST A CAKE FOR MOTHER'S DAY NOT A WEDDING!!!!!
Patti May 6th 2006 11:37AM
To Rose (# 7 comment)....Sweetie, you can't get Diabetes from eating sugar!!
Allison May 6th 2006 11:39AM
*sigh* To the people that are freaking out over the price, you've obviously never been in Dean and deLuca. It's an expensive store, and very popular in Manhattan. Some people like pamering. Others abhor waste. Doesn't change the fact that it is cute and clever, and with a little innovation, could be very easily made at home. Make any kind of cake in a large round pan (spring form pan and bundt pan immediately come to mind), cut in half, with some filling in between, and frost. If you don't know how to make fondant, buy some marzipan for the handles and trim. Pressing a textured paper towel into the frosting will give it the textured look of leather. Done!

LOL: It's a purse! How long could U look at a purse and not get bored? The cake inside isn't gonna taste any different than cake bought in a box! And yea it will either get moldy or turn into a rock as dry cake does!!!!!!
Go buy a cake mix at the Dollar Store and BINGO U R in busness
Lauren May 6th 2006 12:08PM

Unfortunately, most of you are missing the point of this purse. It's not for grazing as some of you obviously do- it's a work of art that took a craftsman probably a great deal of time to create. Enjoy it for what it is- whether you can afford it or not.
