Lux List: Favorite Egg-cellent Items
Designers love eggs. Eggs have beautiful, clean lines and a great shape. The egg shape is perfectly symmetrical when cut vertically, but has a soft slope that draws the eye along its curves when viewed as a whole. Egg shapes can and do appear just about anywhere anwhere, in both small and large sizes. We've noticed this, as egg-shapes have come up repeatedly on Luxist, but we still have our favorites. Let's face it: some egg designs work better than others. These are some of the good ones:
Vivian Alexander Egg Purses - These novel purses are made out of real Rhea egg shells. They are enameled and decorated to perfection by hand with a variety of precious and semi-precious stones. The interior of the purses are lined with silk and they retail from $1000-7000. The Chanticleer Purse, pictured, costs $2,875.
Hand Carved and Scuplted Eggs - Also made from real egg shells, the amount of hand-detailing done on these sculpted eggs is fantastic. The shape of the egg is always kept intact, even in the small sized duck and pheasant filigree eggs. The sprial goose egg is $200.
Faberge Eggs - No egg list would be complete without a mention of the sumptuous Fabrege eggs. From Salt and Pepper Grinders to pens, each piece is unquestionably a work of art. The comemorative eggs are the most luxurious, like the Imperial Swan Egg, a replica of the egg Czar Nicholas II gave his mother for Easter in 1906. Price: $1,800.
Faberge Jewelery - If the decorative faberge eggs are not satisfying because they must be kept at home, a Faberge Egg Pendent is much more portable. Created with the same attention to detail as the larger eggs, the pendents are made with high quality metals and gems in limited quantities. This red and gold egg pendant, a mere 17-mm long, is made of 18-karat gold with small diamonds studding the surface. Price: $1,740.00.
J Schatz Egg Lamps- We love the simplicity of these stunning light fixtures, especially the Egg Nightlights, which are studded with the designs of constellations that shine brightly when lit. Price: $125.
Nissan Pivo Concept Car - This egg-shaped vehicle was released in the fall of 2005. The zero-emissions car has some unusual features in addition to its unusual design. The cabin rotates 360-degrees, so there is never a need to reverse the car - simply turn around and go!
Richart's Easter Truffles - One of the finest chocolatiers in the world, Richart sells hand-crafted egg-shaped truffles during the Easter season. The truffles are sold in a box of 25 half-eggs and come in flavors like fennel and lemongrass in milk chocolate and seven spice in praline and dark chocolate. Price: $64.90.
Crystal Caviar Server - While the tiny eggs are not egg shaped, but spherical, caviar servers are often egg-shaped, highlighting the origin of the luxury foodstuff. This Blue Crystal Server is hand-cut and holds a 50-gram jar of your favorite caviar - even if it's not beluga. Price: $600.
The Occulas - Designed to be the ultimate personal entertainment system, the Occulas is essentially an egg-shaped womb that is brimming with the hottest technology.
