"Outdated" and "not the best available" are two COMPLETELY different things. about 18 months ago I spent about $4k on a new computer. I'm still cutting edge and even after 18 months, it's still only about 10% off of the bleeding edge technology. You could put XP Media Center on it and it could serve your main HDTV based entertainment center on a 30" screen. $10k for a full media center that's completely upgradeable isn't a bad deal at all.

Evan Labbe

Comments on Dell's $10K XPS Desktop

evan has a good point with a caveat. i also bought a high end PC about 12-18 months ago... still leading edge as far as performance goes, no complaints. I specced the PC I wanted building it myself part by part, vs buying the same thing from various sources, including the boutique high end PC sellers out there (voodoo, alienware, falcon, and a ton of others). ending up buying pre-built from a smaller source, great deal, building it myself would have been only $150 or so cheaper, was worth it.

what you're paying a premium for here is the latest edition graphics card and cutting edge monitor. the LCD screens I was looking at the time were $1200+ for a good 1600x1200 LCD 20" at the time. Dells 24-inch 2405FPW LCD is now available for like $800 with the new 2407 model out.

there's a gigantic amount of cost you could cut out by downgrading to even a 20" LCD... the package is basically a boutique item, targeting a PR release.

high end PCs last pretty well... the latest in graphics cards and monitors, much less so.

kelly

Comments on Dell's $10K XPS Desktop

if you all went and looked at the newest and latest machines like ALX alienware starting 5,500 or the XPS 600 starting 3,400 while some voodoo machines starts with 6,000 , and all of them machines wont give you 30" or 4.26gh or even the quad 512 x 4 graphic cards. this machine can live atleast for 4 years untill you feel the need to put more rams or upgrade the CPU or even get the guad 1gb video cards lol. so i think 10k is a good investment for sure.

Nass
