Abbotsford Estate, Estate of the Day

This rambling home in Abbotsford, British Columbia offers an outstanding amount of space. It is a ten bedroom home that sits on over 20 acres and at 42,767 square feet it is the largest home to ever be listed in Canada and the largest home on record in British Columbia. Construction began way back in 1997 (and the planning started in 1994) and is still ongoing. It has details like 45-foot ceilings in the foyer, an elevator, five fireplaces, geothermal heating and a tunnel out to the pool and cabana area. It features more different types and colors of wood than I have seen in one house in a long time. According to the Great Estates website it first hit the market in early in 2005 and the $12.5 million CAD listing is a record asking price for the Fraser Valley region of Greater Vancouver. It seems to be a bit of a hodgepodge of styles and design influences but if you need lots and lots of room this could be your dream home.

The house is a little too much to me. Too much house and too much money.

I cannot believe anyone would say this home is ugly. Obviously you have a home that is larger, because anyone that has a 3 bedroom home would know that this is a beautiful and extravigant home. I am soory that I do not have as much wealth as someone who does not appreciate this home. P.S. If you do not have a home this size- you are CRAZY to think it is ugly! I love it!

What a grand hotel!

I thought I needed a maid to help me dust my 2000 sq foot house.... This one scares the life out of me! It is absolutely stunning. Too big for my taste but if I ever choose to have my entire Sicilian family move in together I have someplace to turn.

This is another example of conspicuous consumption. Anyone with half a brain can see that this type of construction is not sustainable--the earth cannot support it. In addition, i doubt if anyone would enjoy living there. They would find themselves congregating in the kitchen so as not to feel lonely.
What a waste.

Geez, read the description! It says they started planning in 1994, started construction in 1997, which is On GOING! I would imagine the landscape will be the "finishing" touch, so as not to have all the construction vehicles causing damage. Beautiful home, Lots of character and light. What could Possibly be "ugly" about that, other than the ideas/taste of That author?

I have seen other homes in this price range and this one is missing something. This would not be one that I would consider in this price range. Nice wood work but there is much more to be done here. Anyone considering this house would need to drop alot more into it. I agree with russell miller that it looks like a starter home that someone just kept building on to. I would keep looking. LOL But for that proce everyone has to admit you would start over and build your dream home.

What a waste of time , energy and building materials. P.S. I'm a custom home builder and would of loved to spend this persons budget.

It is extremely difficult to take vast spaces and make them look "homey". What people overlook is that conventional domestic architecture blown up to palace proportions doesn't work. Palaces as in fact "hotels". They have grand public spaces for ceremonial occasions, but people don't actually live in those spaces. They live in much more "liveably" sized and decorated apartments within the palaces and visit the grand spaces only when the occasion demands. It is a lifestyle that is outdated even for royals except on a few specific occasions.

Do you think they can come down to my affordable range? I can throw in 350Grand for it. Lovely home, how about some one giving me the rest of the value so I can have it? I would NEVER complain!

Well, if I had 12 million dollars, I certainly wouldn't spend it on this house! The people that said it was ugly were right. It lacks character...Oh yes, and to whomever said they wondered what the owners were buying to replace it, they probably filed for bankruptcy!

Why would the house be in the market if construction is still ongoing? Does this mean that the buyer have to finish someone else's job? If the owners would make up their minds and complete their project, it could be a house they will truly enjoy. Just need an intercom system every 50 ft to call out for dinner. I'll put in my resume if they need housekeeping services. Don't do windows though. Can you imagine all that windex? By the way, is there a golf course nearby?

No wonder nobody wants to buy it.
