Oscar Best and Worst Dressed
This year's fashion offered a few hits and as
always some startling misses. This year the predominant color seemed to be no color at all. Many gowns were some form
of beige or nude. My picks for the best and worst are below. Let me know yours in the comments.Best
Women
1) Reese Witherspoon's elegant vintage Christian Dior.
2: Ziyi Zhang's Armani bustier and Swarovski crystal-covered skirt. As fabulously dazzling as the costumes she wore in "Memoirs of a Geisha."
3) Salma Hayek's azure satin gown by Versace. The color was gorgeous but it did show the lines of her foundation garments.
4) Jessica Alba's gold Versace gown. I'm not sure what she's doing on at the Oscars but she looks good.
5) Jennifer Garner's Michael Kors gown. Shimmering, flattering, and takes good advantage of that post-baby cleavage.
Men:
1) Ludacris's tasteful black-on-black Armani ensemble.
2) Paul Giamatti's Hugo Boss suit, tasteful, elegant and quite slimming.
3) Will Smith's midnight blue David August tuxedo. Not all men can pull off wearing a vest but it looks quite handsome on Mr. Smith.
Worst
Women:
1) Maggie Gyllenhaal's Bottega Veneta gown. It looked liked living room drapes hanging on drooping gold chains. And what's with all the gowns with pockets this year? Is there a purse boycott I was unaware of?
2) Jennifer Lopez's vintage gown from Rita Watnick at Lily et Cie. There's just too much going on here, wraps, pleats, surplus fabric. Her impressive figure looks best in simpler outfits.
3) Michelle Williams's screaming yellow gown from Vera Wang. A beautiful girl but that color is not flattering with pale skin and the tulle frills at the top combined with the drapery over the lower half seem to draw attention to all the wrong areas. In nearly every picture the neckline is flapping up. Also the necklace which uses blackened metal is too harsh with such a delicate look.
4)Naomi Watts's shredded catastrophe from Givenchy. The color made her look washed out and the dress looked as if she had a bad run in with a lawnmower.
5) Charlize Theron's black Christian Dior. We realize she probably has to wear Christian Dior since she shills for their fragrance line but this dress would be a beauty without that giant shoulder pouf.
Men:
1) Phillip Seymour Hoffman's tuxedo. On a man of a certain girth on all black ensemble with a silver tie is not flattering.
2) Jamie Foxx: turquoise shirt and shadow-striped suit seemed like an attempt to attract attention now that it's not his year anymore.
3) Was Morgan Freeman wearing an ascot around his neck?
4) Gary Busey, ah, Gary Busey.
Most gorgeous accessories
1) Keira Knightley's
2) Amy Adams's aquamarine and diamond earrings (a loan from Carolina Herrera who designed her gown). They look heavy but so gorgeous with her big blue eyes.
3) Nicole Kidman's Fred Leighton bracelets. Just the right touch of sparkle with her Balenciega applique gown.
4) Jennifer Garner's chandelier earrings.
5) Jane Seymour's tiny guitar purse.

I loved Naomi Watts' dress. It was feminine yet modern and edgy and complemented her skin color very well. It was pure sophistication. Reese's dress was simply boring. She looked like something out of the 50s.

I also didn't like Naomi Watts dress...I didn't get the whole rag thing. What did you think about Felicity Huffman? Usually she's so elegant, but I didn't like this dress on her. The very low cut neckline did it. I didn't like that you could see her rib bones. Also didn't like Sandra Bullock's hair and makeup, the dress was OK.

I agree with the negative reviews of Naomi Watts' dress. She is such a beautiful woman but this dress did her no favors. It looked like she had no bust or waist because of all the shredded, puffy stuff in the middle and she looked pale and haggard because of the color. My pick for best dressed was Nicole Kidman....simple, beautiful dress, simple hairstyle. She looked beautiful and classy. Most boring would go to Jennifer Aniston. Why does she always choose the same style of dress and why does she always go with the same hairstyle she had while on "Friends"?

I have to say the dresses were beautiful. I also would like to agree that Jenniger Aniston has GOT to do something about her look. She is so boring and no changes for years and years. Is she that insecure? Also there is NO one that is more classy and elegant than Nicole Kidman, that woman was born a princess.

Keira Knightley said that the collar was vintage Bulgari when she was interviewed on the red carpet ... what is all of this about Asprey? Or doesn't she pay attention to who loaned her such a marvelous piece?

Charlize Theron deserves number one for worst dressed, that bow is absolutely horrid.
fernando Mar 6th 2006 10:46AM
Keira Knightley's necklace IS vintage bulgari, as was Jennifer aniston's. Oscar.com reported it incorrectly!!

Jennifer Aniston was a knockout, why does she need to change anything? stunning, beautiful.

First of all, Reese Witherspoon was definately the best dressed, second, Naomi Watts looked like a car wreck, and last, may be the NEWS people messed up on the aspry part of Kiera's necklace. Did you ever think that she may not dress herself? I wouldn't have known either if I were rich enough to have someone else dress me.

Michelle Williams looked gorgeous! It was a dark enough yellow for her skintone and the lipstick pulled it all together glamourously.

Did the designers this year have a mind block ? These were the ugliest gowns I have ever seen, if they had some saving grace then the herculian shoulders or padded behinds killed that ! Sandra Bullock's gown was satisfactory, she carried it well- Charlize Theron who is so beautiful, looked like aliens had just let her off their ship and had dressed her in their uniform.
Pamela Mar 6th 2006 3:41PM
Uma Thurman was stunningly elegant. Few women can pull off all-ecru-all-the-time (including makeup, but she managed to do just that.
And yes, Jennifer Aniston seems to be forever rooted in her high school look . . .

I agree that Charlize Theron looked like an alien. The entire time i thought it was a joke gown! I, unlike most, enjoyed Sandra Bullock's dress, and her POCKETS! I thought that it was so clever, it didn't detract from the gown, and very much needed for an actor/PRODUCER.

Naomi Watts' would have done well as a real live 'Corpse Bride' in this dress. Ummm... is cleaning a gown in an industrial washing machine with a load of new denim recommended? I would also have to question the wisdom of using a wool carding brush on tulle???
paul dixon Mar 6th 2006 8:34PM
i thought dolly parton looked great!!!
Linda Mar 6th 2006 8:45PM
Naomi Watts looked like she just came from a bad date with Freddie Kruger or Edward Scissorhands. I swear some people don't look in a mirror. Edgy?!! Maybe like she met with the edge of a razor! I cannot believe that someone actually designed that gown and got paid for it. It makes this pretty girl look washed out and totally ridiculous. Maybe pure sophistication for 'night of the living dead'! HORRIBLE! Reece looked lovely. Charlize looked more like she was from the 50's, hair and all. If you watch old movies where they have fashion shows, I think you might even see that gown. Another case of a designer making a beautiful woman look awful. And, I love him, but what was with John Travolta's hair? It looked like paint. Ziyi Zhang looked stunning and is just the most adorable little thing. And, will Jane Seymour ever get ugly? So pretty. Nicole Kidman, always perfect.

One more thing, Jennifer Anniston. 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'. She looks just fine.
Linda Mar 6th 2006 9:46PM
I just found a photo a Lauren Hutton, former model with a gap between her two, top front teeth. Now, talk about bad taste! Just take a look at her photo! The leather gloves and clutch are bad enough, but that 'thing' she's wearing around her waist??????? HELLO!!! I guess she never learned how to dress in all the years that she was modeling. Not even funky enough to be cool. Wonder what she's wearing on her feet? Clown shoes?
carolina Mar 6th 2006 11:37PM
I loved Jennifer Aniston's dress. But she does need to change her hairstyle. My favorite was Salma H.
Cynthia Mar 6th 2006 11:53PM
I thought Uma Thurman was amazing with Nicole Kidman a close second. I agree with the others who say that Jennifer Aniston's look is boring and I do think that it is broke and it needs to be fixed.
