College students in Napa can get a real education in winemaking. We've mentioned the
UC Davis wine
program before and now
Napa Valley College has their
own winery. The
St.
Helena Star reports on the first ever winery for a community college. The Napa Valley College program takes the
students through the entire process of creating wine from taking care of the vines to marketing the finished product.
The students work on a six-acre vineyard and there will be a 1500-case winery and cellar. The plan is to sell 500 cases
per year, 100 each of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Syrah and a Bordeaux blend. Dr. Stephen Krebs, a
three-time graduate of the Davis program, is the man behind the program which offers a complete two-year, Associate of
Science degree in viticulture and winery technology. The program trains 1,200 students a year. In order to make
and sell the wine, the school had to get approval from the California government. The first wine to be released will be
their Sauvignon Blanc in 2007.
