We
covered a
gorgeous tropical island recently. A very
different type of island has hit eBay. A Newfoundland island i
s
up for sale for $6 million. The ten-acre island known as Greeps Head or Bald Eagles Head includes a 160-year-old
house. The area of Grand Bruit, on the southwest coast of Newfoundland is accessible only by boat or airplane and the
island is connected to the mainland by a 100-foot causeway. The area has no roads or major automobile traffic. The area
has beautiful hiking and the chance to see a wide variety of wildlife. Grand Bruit has a museum and there is an annual
summer festival held in August. After reading
The
Shipping News, I think I've been scared off Newfoundland but if you need a remote and chilly hideaway this is the
place for you.

That island really does not look very attractive at all. I would imagine you could find much better islands for $6 million.

i don't think anything built in the 19th century could be 1160 years old, do you mean 160 years old?

I think for that price they should build a road from the hwy to the town .

I think that it is a beautiful island. Our province is so full of such history that it's hard not to be attracted to this island and the home which is on it. I know the picture of the island itself is a little discouraging, but if you go to the ad on ebay, it shows pictures of the land around the house, as well as pictures of the house and the 100ft causeway which connects the island to Grand Bruit. As for the comment of the island being remote and "chilly": this is Newfoundland, not Iceland....we do not live in igloos and we do have a beautiful summer....warm, not chilly.

I couldn't quite afford a whole island but I have just bought a house in Cupids! Can anyone advise where I can buy good quality pine furniture?

After reading The Shipping News you are scared off of Newfoundland? Don't you realize that the story is fiction? That's like saying - after seeing the movie Gangs of New York I'm scared off of New York City. It's a stupid comment.
When are people going to stop believing bigoted comments about Newfoundland and Newfoundlanders? The truth is that Newfoundland is a beautiful island in the middle of the north Atlantic (so yes, it is wet and cold there from time to time – but it can also be sunny and warm). The people of Newfoundland have all sorts of different personalities – funny enough – just like people from anywhere else!
