While recently in the Virgin Islands, I came across a delightful piece of real estate just north of the island of St. Thomas.
Thatch Cay is a 230 acre island between St. Thomas and St. John that is completely undeveloped and waiting for the right buyer to come and snatch her up. With 5 miles of shoreline and elevations up to 500ft, the island would make a lovely vacation getaway. Right now, there are no docks or landing areas on the island so, development would be entirely at your discretion. Personally, I envision a James Bond villain-type compound complete with shark tank and inept henchman.

Why buy a foreign island when you can buy a local island in Jacksonville, Florida?
David Feb 9th 2006 8:27AM
It said USVI that means it belongs to the United States. United States Virgin Islands.
jimmy jones Feb 9th 2006 8:34AM
u.s. virgin islands isn't "foreign" genius. Also jacksonville is a huge dump.
MJ Feb 9th 2006 9:11AM
Leave Emilio alone-i mean c'mon; why would you want a permanent vacation island/home in the Caribbean when you could spend your time in Jacksonville-sounds like a no-brainer to me!
Mozart720 Feb 9th 2006 9:16AM
HAHAH You're right.. Jacksonville is a dump....but more like the armpit of the earth!!! I think this island is a gold mine. You buy the land then do the good old American thing.....bring in developers to place hotels and sell the property for 10 times the price.
Bridget Feb 9th 2006 9:33AM
Shoot, why bring hotels in? I'd personally love that piece of land. No problem here... My own private island I could let my dog run loose.... or with my luck, it'd be like Isla Sorna (or whatever the name of that deserted island is on Jurassic Park 2&3) I could turn the music up loud, without benefit of neighbors. So, I wouldn't have to worry about that neighbors. Think about it... USVI or not.... if it's YOURS, you're still in America, you haven't left yet. If it's YOURS, you can just pick and choose who you want to come visit.

bah, I can buy one of many islands in the Philippines that are around 1/2 to 3/4 the size of this island for $200,000 to $300,000. I'd get a much better ROI over there.
JannetMoore Feb 9th 2006 10:53AM
Why Not Jacksonville? Several Reasons But I'll Give you only A Few.......1. Duval County(Jacksonville)Used To,OR Still Does Have The highest per capita lung cancer rate in U.S. 2. Partly Because of The Paper Mill Industry 3. Jacksonville isn't Florida,it's Georga. The map was drawn wrong. 4 Jeb Bush ISN'T Governor Of U.S.V.I. 5. Too many residents are ignorant enough to think U.S.V.I. is foreign
ONE PROUD AMERICAN Feb 9th 2006 11:10AM

Ok, I'm not sure what 3rd world country/s you have been in, but I've been to a few. For some reason, I can see trading all the white bread and ice cream making US citizens obese for the pure natural foods of 3rd world countries. If you want to sell the good ol' USA, please come up with a better attraction than ice cream?
ron schweikart Feb 9th 2006 12:25PM
i was going to purchase the island, but i'm $1.27 short. any chance of getting a government loan or maybe go with a section 8?
Amanda Feb 9th 2006 1:18PM
If I could purchase that island for myself and my family, the LAST thing that I'd want to do is to "develop" it and use it as a vacation home. I'd leave it as natural as possible, build a small hut and live off the land.
If a hurricaine destroyed it, what would we have lost that we couldn't rebuild? And we wouldn't have to worry about insurance claims or lost "valuables". The most valuable thing we would have would be our LIVES and simple BELIEFS AND VALUE SYSTEMS. Although I would definitely establish some sort of storm shelter.
Craig Feb 9th 2006 1:45PM
LOL....all of these guys on here trashing Jacksonville , probabley live in some hole like Detroit or Cleveland
Sunny Feb 9th 2006 1:47PM
Number 8, you should "brush up" on your geography and spelling. The Jacksonville referred to here is in Florida, of which Jeb Bush is governor. Also, Georgia is not spelled "Georga".
Cindy Feb 9th 2006 1:52PM
I'm surprised someone hasn't snatched up this island already....what a GREAT place to retire. I know what I'm going to ask Santa for this coming Christmas.
Katie Brown Feb 9th 2006 2:21PM
