Floating Helium Lights
Project Light is a new project from young
designer Luc Schouten. Light, which was shown off at the Cologne Fair recently is lifted into the air by helium and
light a balloon trapped indoors, wanders slowly across the ceiling. As his website says, a whole cluster of these would
be gorgeous at a party.[via Designspotter]

Comment from the designer:
Helium is na so called noble gas. It is not explosive, toxic or burnable gas! Clowns should never mix up hydrogen with helium.
Also the Light I used for the design is a LED which means that there is no heat coming from the light source.
The lamps easily last 10 days even if they are treated like toys.

Well, it sure looks cool. Considering no heat, what if it gets close to a lightbulb? It probably isn't dangerous when people are careful, but people are rarely careful...

This looks nice, but it would be great engineering and science to make these safe and not floating time bombs when the helium erupts from the heat of the lights.

The tragedy of helium explosions turns up virtually every week on CNN. My daughter's birthday party was cut short when the clown incinerated the cake by lighting the candles too close to the balloons.
Anyway, these lights could make a really good effect at an event held in a large room. This picture on the site gives some of an idea of how it could look. I just hope they are not too flimsy and would last through a party that lasts 6 or more hours.
