Las Vegas Plans Massive Sports Resort

The condo market in Las Vegas may be in a slump but that isn't stopping new resorts from being developed. The latest is the Ultimate Sports Resort (not its official name), a sports-themed mega-resort. The complex will be in North Las Vegas near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The $4 billion project will have 5,500 rooms, ten sports arenas, 150,000 sq. foot casino and 750,000 sq. foot convention center. The resort will offer places to watch sports, play sports, test out sports equipment and buy sports memorabilia. The four primary hotel towers will feature giant LED displays and the towers are capable of broadcasting sporting events taking place inside. The new resort's website has video of the plans for the interior and exterior of this massive complex.

Doesn't sound like a great idea considering there is little if anything in North Las Vegas near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. I am not sure people will appreciate the long drive to the strip...

I doubt this will be built, it doesn't mention where the financing is coming from. You'd think a real $4billion construction project would get some more fanfare too.
And the arena is a bad idea, especially if they think they can get a pro franchise there. While Vegas may soon (1-5 years) get an NBA/NHL team I highly doubt either leagues will allow the arena to be inside a casino complex.

By doing research, you will see that the sports venues are all located outside of the casino so that you will never have to walk inside the casino to attend a sporting event. In addition, the drive from the Las Vegas strip to the site loaction is 8 minutes. It will take you longer than that to drive from the Sahara hotel to Mandalay Bay if you go down the Las Vegas strip. Futhermore, in 2009, when the resort is open, the city of North Las Vegas will be developed out in that area. N. Las Vegas is the second fastest growing city in the nation. Around the proposed site, they are developing 42,000 acres of land with housing, businesses, and other structures.

*cough* above is a blatant marketing plug from someone involved in the project *cough*
They are indeed outside of the casino building but still on casino property and still owned by the casino. Neither would be acceptable to the NBA, and with 'the great Betsky' scandal, I doubt the NHL either.
Actual proof of financing hasn't been mentioned, how many Vegas condo project have we seem with similar boasts of huge development but no action.
The Mayor is certainly very vocal about his desire for a pro-sports franchise in the city of Las Vegas (I'm sure the Sonics are using this in their negotiations for a new arena from Seattle). But the idea of building an arena in North Vegas is rediculous.
The area is not a 'tourist spot' and with the megaresorts staying away I doubt it will be for some time, certainly not in it's current state. So building an arena far away from the strip is a financially stupid move, especially with the T&M center blocks away from the strip & casinos all able to lure musicians to their smaller venues for more money.
The Las Vegas sports resort is one of many pipedreams for 'entrepreneurs' with visions of becoming Steve Wynn but lacking his financial/business and creative flair.

This project definitely has a lot of potential as long as they are able to secure financing and find a Pro sports team to occupy their arena. A large percentage of the 100,000+ NASCAR fans will stay there during the race and many of them will return throughout the year if they like the casino/sports complex. But ultimately the largest draw will be the flat rate $59.00 a night rooms, because as nice as the Bellagio and Wynn are, not everyone is willing to spend $299 a night on a room. My only criticisms would be that horrible football field carpet they have planned for the casino, and I think that TEN night clubs might be a bit of over saturation, 5 or 6 would be plenty for this type of resort. Overall a very good idea if they can pull it off.
