Wine International reports that the
Bruichladdich Distillery celebrated Burn's NIght (the anniversary of the birth
of poet Robert Burns) in a unique way this year. The distillery created a special distillation using an ancient form of
barley known to Burns as ‘Bere.' The distillation process was shown live on the Bruichladdich website
webcams. Twenty acres of the barley, which fell out of use in the 18th century, were planted on Islay in spring of 2005
and harvested. They will make 25 casks of whisky which should yield ten thousand bottles for sale when the whisky
matures in 2016.
