I don't know who C.K. of Dexter-Haven is, but he/she isn't very good at research. The Fort Hill Estate was originally owned by William Matheson, founder of Allied Chemical. He owned most of Lloyd Neck, NY as well as all of Key Biscayne, Florida. His offspring gave away most of Lloyd neck decades ago. His former residence, the Fort Hill, remains as one of the few true Gold Coast Estates.
Originally, Fort Hill was called Fort Franklin, after Benjamin Franklin's son, William Franklin, Govenor of New Jersey. It was the original site of a Tory Fort in the Revolutionary War. That alone should tell you something of the view....situated high on a bluff, Fort Hill has a 270 degree commanding view of the Long Island sound, Center Island, Oyster Bay, and Cold Spring Harbor.
The 28,000 square foot Fort Hill Gold Cost residence is on the National Historic Register. The 2 acre formal gardens has been open to the public once in the past 4 years...a charity fund raiser for SPLIA (Soceity for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities). Thus, the gardens are not communal gardens as C.K. states.
Finally, given that Sassafras, another Gold Coast Estate just down the street from Fort Hill, was just listed for $60 million and Northwood, a Gold Coast Estate across the bay in Oyster Harbor is listed for $43 million, the 13.5 acres, formal gardens, commanding water views, historic registry, 1500 feet of beachfront, and 42 room, 28,000 square feet Fort Hill residence seems quite reasonable at $24 million compared to other Estates in the area.

I did a little investigation into this place, and another one listed to day...(I am currently visiting in the immediate area)
It appears that some parts of this estate have been sold off in the past, so privacy is a likely issue...in addition, the gardens are communal for all that live there...that isn't something I would want to spend all that $$ for, just to share the gardens other than for spring garden tours on behalf of local charities...
Too bad too, it looks like a pretty cool place.
