Washington Portrait Sets Record But Still Comes in Low
A portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart that was for sale at Sotheby's sold for $8.136 million on Wednesday. It was a record for a U.S. artist and a Washington portrait but still below the $10 million to $15 million pre-sale estimate. A second portrait of Washington didn't sell. The sale was a fundraiser by the New York Public Library and brought in $15.64 million which was below the prediction of $22 million to $31 million.
