James Bond Car Up For Auction
The latest auction from
RM Auctions in January 2006 willl feature the usual
assortment of rare treasures. One of the most desired items will be the
1964 Aston Martin
DB5 driven by the character James Bond in the movies Goldfinger and Thunderball. The car is one of four created
expressly for the films and has all sorts of Bondworthy details including prop machine guns that fire from behind the
headlights and a wheel-mounted tire slasher. It has the classic Bond revolving license plate but unfortunately the
ejector seat has been replaced. How much? RM Auctions isn't assigning a value to the car which means you'll just have
to get out your wallet and keep bidding until they decide it's sold. Other items in the auction include a 1928 Cadillac
built for Al Capone (estimated to sell for $250,000 to $500,000). Continuing the gun-loving theme, Hank Williams Jr.'s
1964 Pontiac Bonneville comes bedazzled with 18 pistols, 547 silver dollars, 12 silver horseshoes and 17 sterling
silver horse heads. It is estimated to sell for $100,000 to $200,000. Other cars for sale include the unique 1941
Cadillac Thunderbolt, a 1930 Duesenberg Model J LWB Dual Cowl Phaeton ($1,000,000-$1,500,000) and a 1937 Bugatti T57C
Aravis Drophead Coupe ($1,200,000-$1,400,00).

The Bond cars are very cool. In about 1985 or so, Sotheby's NY had one of the A-M's and the Roll's used in Goldfinger.
At the time I had a business relationship with Sotheby's and happened to be passing the loading dock where the cars were placed for that day. Since I knew some of the men working on that dock they let me check out the two cars...Both were seriously cool and really fun to sit in and speculate about owning...
And here is one of the DB5's...I shudder to think what it will sell for. A non-Bond one in good shape can bring between 250k-400k. (At least from what I have seen when I look for them at specialty auto places...

Oh, how much I want that car! But I don't have enough money even to buy a wheel hub on it... :'( You see, I'm a huge fan of the James Bond-movies, and it has been my highest dream since I was a little child to have the particular Aston Martin in question. Well well... I'll have to keep on dreaming...

This car was owned by my uncle who married a woman and suddenly had a 14 year old son who now is now selling all his cars from the Smokey Mountian Car Museum. He just died 3 years ago. So sad....

You might be interested in knowing that another A/M DB5 visited Camp-X just recently, December 2nd 2005. Ian Fleming was at Camp-X in 1942 and gained many of his ideas for his books from the training of secret agents at Camp-X. To see the car at Camp-X: camp-x.com
