Frida Kahlo Tequila
Mexico's most famous female artist, Frida Kahlo is the inspiration for a new tequila, Frida Kahlo Tequila. The tequila is made from 100% pure blue agave and will be launched first in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami, as well as in Mexico, with plans to expand nationally in 2006. The tequila is made in Jesus Maria, in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. The Frida tequila will be available in Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo versions. The Blanco is fermented for up to four days and sells for $50; the Reposado is aged for six to nine months in American Oak casks and sells for $65 and the Añejo is aged three years and sells for $90. The bottle will feature a picture of the artist. Not everyone is thrilled by the idea of using Frida to sell tequila. This article in the Miami Herald covers some of the controversy. We've seen Elvis and Marilyn Monroe wines is the Frida tequila any different?

I just received the bottle of reposado as a birthday gift. It is the most exquisitely designed, handmade/handblown bottle. Even the wooden cap has her image burnt into it. Very very beautiful and I can't wait to get the other two. I'm fearing I will have to have a collection to save, and one to drink! I've been told that each of the three bottles have a different picture of Frida, and it's not her self-portraits. The chosen pictures were selected by her family/Kahlo estate.
