Wine Storage Facility Fire
We've talked about wine
storage
facilities as a safe option for your precious collection
but what happens when the facility has a fire?
The San Francisco
Chronicle reports that Wines Central in Vallejo, California went up in a
three alarm fire on Wednesday. The storage facility was a fortress-like structure that had steel doors and a concrete
roof which made things very difficult for firefighters. Tens of millions of dollars of prized wines are believed
destroyed. The facility has been open since 2002 and stored more than 500,000 cases of rare vintages for wineries and
private collectors.

There are so many wine storage facilities that are in the same physical building as completely non-related businesses it astounds me. I see wine storage even within self storage facilities where you have NO idea what the guy storing beside you has in his locker. We considered this when we formed Iron Gate Cellarage and have the building completely seperate. In fact, we will allow NO mechanical equipment in the vault that could possibly short and start a fire and all wiring is encased. A lot can be learned from this fire.
