New Songo, South Korea's new super-city
Ryan Block over at Engadget has the scoop on New Songo, a brand new city to be built 40 miles outside of Seoul, South Korea which he calls "the world's largest gadget." They seem to be aiming for a City of the Future like we were promised in the '50s, though perhaps without the hovercars. New Songo will be built around a $279 million RFID research center, and its 65,000 residents will live in homes equipped with electronic locks, videoconferencing, and video-on-demand, and each one will have a non-identity-linked smartcard that they'll use to make purchases, access mass transit and parking, and unlock their homes. But, Ryan asks, by the time the city is completed—in 2014 at a predicted cost of $25 billion—will all that technology be obsolete?
