We've talked about the
rare double eagle before now get ready for the smaller but
also rare quarter eagle. The coin, which is around the size of a dime was made of Gold Rush ore at the San
Francisco mint in 1854 and is one of only 12 known to exist. The coin, which has been in the seller's family since
somewhere between 1856 and 1858, will go up for auction on September 18 through American Numismatic Rarities. The
family took good care of the coin and it is in excellent condition. The starting bid is $120,000 but it is expected
that the price could rise above $150,000.
