Vilafonte
Vilafonte is an intriguing new venture that brings together American winemakers and South African vineyards.
The head winemaker is Zelma Long, former Chief Winemaker at the Robert Mondavi Winery. The vineyards, in the
Paarl-Simonsberg region on the northern side of the Simonsberg Mountains are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,
Malbec and Cabernet Franc grapes. The two wines are called Vilafonte Series M and Vilafonte Series C. Both are
blends of the four grapes, the M is more merlot-heavy and the C is more cab-strong. The 2003 is the first vintage
to be released. Not inexpensive, the wines are aimed at the luxury market and the goal is to create one of the
best wineries in the world. Both wines can be pre-ordered off the Vilafonte website.
