Is Gold Out of Fashion?

From the news-I don't-believe file comes this article that claims gold is "no longer the metal of choice for the adornment of the ruling class."  The article states that rappers and others who drape themselves in gold are hurting the gold market in the long run. This seems pretty ridiculous, if Mr. T draped in gold chains in the 1980s didn't hurt gold's image, is it really in danger from Nelly?   If this is true then the diamond market should also be facing a serious problem.  In my opinion, gold's problem comes not from the hip-hop community but from the increase of the use of other metals including titanium and platinum in jewelry design.  However, gold has been used as the metal of the elite since the days of the pharoahs so it seems unlikely it will fall out of fashion permanently.
