Most Expensive Cabinet Sells at Auction
A Florentine cabinet from the 1700s has sold for £19 million at Christie's in London. The cabinet was commissioned by Henry Somerset, the 3rd Duke of Beaufort in 1726. It is 14ft high and 7ft wide and made of ebony and gilt bronze, encrusted with semiprecious stones. It was bought by the former ruler of the principality of Liechtenstein. The cabinet will go to the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna, which is being refitted to house the collection of Prince Hans Adam II. It's a bit of a shame that it's going to a musuem because I would certainly love to know what one puts in a cabinet that large and expensive.
