Sweet Tokaji
This month's Christie's wine newsletter focuses on the sweet wine of Tokaji, an area in the far northeastern region of Hungary. The wine was served in the French and Russian imperial courts and was believed to have restorative powers. These wines feature shriveled aszu grapes for extra sweetness. Christie's London will be auctioning off vintage 1845 Tokay at a fine wines auction on December 9-10. The wines are currently lying in underground cellars in Hungary but will be shipped before the auction. The auction also features vintage ports, as well as rare vintages of Chateau Latour and Chateau Petrus.
